Hello guys. I’m going to be a freshman in a couple of weeks and I have a question about volunteering.
I want to apply to several volunteer positions at hospitals and volunteer during the fall semester. Almost all of these applications require some form of recommendation from a professional. My question is who can I ask?
Do I head back to my high school and ask one of my teachers (assuming they are even available)?
Can I ask a professor to sign it within only weeks of getting to know him/her?
Are there college offices that help with this kind of thing?
So I was wondering, how do other freshman get this done?
Have you volunteered in the past? Use one of those references.
Could you use a guidance counselor from HS?
It also may be worth waiting a bit to start volunteering…get used to classes, making friends, joining clubs…and then get to know a professor at office hours or your advisor.
@bopper I’ve volunteered before but they weren’t long-term commitments that are several months long. They are just casual help-out short of things that last a few hours.
My guidance counselor could be an option but she is away from my high school and won’t be back until I am off to college.
The last piece of advice is great but my college advisor specifically asked me to volunteer at hospitals so I can’t follow it. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Is there maybe a club or organization at your school that does volunteer work? And even if your advisor told you to volunteer at hospitals, it doesn’t mean you have to start right this semester, does it?
