Volunteering or Sports?

Which one is more preferred by colleges? To be honest, I'm not that good at sports, so I dedicate most of my time after school and outside of school to clubs and things like volunteering. I'm pretty dedicated (planning to volunteer until end of senior year) to the hospital I volunteer at (seniors) and the church I tutor at (elementary kids). And yes, I do learn new things. ^^ But will colleges "look down" on me because of lack of sports?

There are many students that head to top schools each year never having played a varsity sport. If it’s your passion and you love it, that’s great! If not, be active in your community just like you’ve been doing. Schools are not looking for one type of student, they simply want to know what the heck you did outside of the classroom. What makes you tick? Did you have a part time job, volunteer, were you on a school academic team? None are more important, they just tell part of who you are and what you find important. Even the most sports orientated campuses with great school spirit know that at many schools there are 2,500 students and only one varsity football team. Not everyone can be a starter. Not everyone WANTS to be! As trite as it sounds, be who you are.

blueiguana nailed it. In fact, you do yourself a disservice to submit a laundry list of activities that don’t say anything except that you joined a ton of clubs and checked off all the “right” boxes (sports, work, community service, music, research). It’s much better to choose the two or three things you really love and invest yourself in them: demonstrate some leadership, creativity, passion, growth-you’ll learn more, enjoy it more, and have more impact.
