What is the average number of volunteer hours a pre-med holds? Would having a small amount of volunteer hours hurt one's application? Would volunteering at one place over a long time period and showing comittment be better or volunteering at a variety of places for exposure to a range of volunteering activities be better?

Average number of volunteer hours is all over the place. Some schools have specific recommendations. (For example, UColorado explicitly states it expects 400+ volunteer hours from all applicants.)

I suspect, but cannot offer any specific support for the idea, that continuity is volunteering is viewed more favorably than having multiple short term activities. (Demonstates dedication and perseverance.)
