I live in the DFW area, and I'm looking for volunteer opportunities. I've already found some hospitals and libraries (but it's so cliche... everyone does hospitals and libraries), and I'm looking at some tutoring opportunities. I'm also trying to find nursing homes... key word being trying. Volunteering search engines haven't been very helpful either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you want to work in nursing homes, think about what you have to offer then call up some nursing homes and offer your services as a volunteer. Probably the best volunteer opportunities anywhere are ones that people create for themselves that also fill an unmet need of an agency.

the best volunteering by far for high school students is canvassing/interning on a political campaign. this is the hot season for it as midterms are in nov. plus, state races love young people and it's easy to get involved

anyways, why would you want to work in some boring old nursing home?

our local newspaper always has a section where places who need volunteers put ads or w/e, yours might also

how do u get involved in a political campaign?

do u just contact running candidates and ask them if they need help?

Hey serendipity, I live in DFW as well. Habitat for Humanity is a great program. I just started helping out with the Trinity chapter, and it's really been worth it. You'll meet some truly interesting people who are contagiously dedicated. Most of the volunteers also tend to be older so it isn't a back breaking competition to try an accomplish the most individually. It's steadily paced, but not killer, and they try to stay on a maintainable schedule.

It helps if you volunteer for a candidate whose political viewpoint you support. Go to the campaign office and offer your support.

You really should identify some issue in your community that you have a passion for and pursue a volunteer experience there. Is there anything happening in DFW that you really care about?

Well, connections usually help in getting invovled in a political campaign, but you can always research the candidates running in ur district and call up the campaign office. All you have to do is google search a district map (I would recommend volunteering with the State Senate races b/c those are usually more involving) or call a political-conscious person near you and ask what district u live in (you could call your governor's office, mayor, or some other important figure) and then google search that district. Trust me, these campaigns love to get young people, in fact they might try to take over ur a life a little bit. It's hard work, I will tell you that.
