Vp at Lawrence University

Up until the point I have been looking into mostly musical theater degress, and most of the schools on ym list are musical theater schools. I have fallen in love with Lawrence and noticed that they ahd a VP major. I ahve originally though VP was mroe for those who wanted to be opera singers but I am not sure. I am jsut a bit confused. While I can sing soprano I am more a mezzo soprano . Is VP usually only for sopranos? Im just trying to familirize mysself, as up until now I have only been looking at musical theater schools, but now im jsut rethinking things a bit. How is the VP program at Lawrence? I know their music school is top notch. Thank you in advance.

I'm planning on applying to Lawrence and many other schools as a VP major. In my opinion, a VP major is for someone whose strength is in his or her voice (obviously). In my case I feel that a MT degree is far to limiting. Also, think about this, if you aren’t classically trained and you’re doing 8 shows a week you’re going to burn out. Consider classical training when looking at MT schools. If you want to do Broadway there are many who have done very well with VP degrees. You might also consider a VP if you’re not the strongest dancer.

Yeah me and dancing are not compatible haha. WHat do you mean by you think a MT degree is to limitied? Obviously your a guy form teh name lol, but yeah I was like well lawrence doesn't offer a mt degree but they do have VP which if I made it I could do, and then do the theater arts mabye as a minor or the double major thing and minor in psych. Also I was in a chorus when I was little but i am mroe of a mezzo soprano. Is VP really only for sopranos? ( Again I don't know if you would know this as you are a guy lol). Where else are you applying?

My daughter is a vocal performance major at Rice and is a mezzo. She is a classical/opera singer. She also had the opportunity to do some music theater (light opera) in non-Shepherd School productions at Rice. She is pretty familiar with the top mezzo teachers in the country. She chose Rice because of a particular teacher (among other reasons). She took a lesson from a teacher at Lawrence and liked the teacher, but Lawrence wasn't a good fit for her.

Yeah Rice is a very good school. Is that your list of safties or top choices??
VP is not just for Sopranos. These are the schools im applying to. Along with some in-state saftey schools.

Lawrence provides/requires musical theater training as part of the vocal performance major. Musicals are performed annually -- they are performing The Mystery of Edwin Drood this weekend. Interestingly, Lawrence students won the Wisconsin NATS musical theater competition just a couple of weeks ago despite the lack of a formal MT program. The vocal performance program at Lawrence would provide a number of opportunities for MT training and performance but not at the depth of an MT program which would include, for example, much more dance.
