vs. UVA

I will be attending either William and Mary or UVA soon, and was wandering which school would better set me up for acceptance into med school in the future, provided I take care of business in all aspects. Also, which school is harder/rougher on the student in terms of grading? Thanks.

If you "take care of business" as you say, either school will get you where you want to go. If you like, you can go to WM, and then Med School at UVA.

Most WM students will tell you WM is more rigorous with tougher grading. However, I took a midnight tour of UVA a couple of days ago, and at 1 am the library floors were pretty full. I think both can be pretty challenging depending on circumstances.

In the end, I suggest visiting both and choosing the one that has the right environment for your personal tastes. They are quite different from one another so it shouldn't be too difficult to choose. Both are great places for undergrad. Ultimately, the greatest variable to reaching your goal will be how well you perform, not which one of these schools you attend.

i think they're virtually equal in terms of academic rigor. but i agree with FLVADAD that the environments are totally different. my d was accepted to both, and chose based on NON-academic factors. good luck!

I was accepted to both as well, and I agree with FLVADAD and happycollegemom. I spent time on both campuses and it was really tough for me to decide, but my decision came to down to the fact that William and Mary is a smaller school with smaller introductory courses and, therefore, rely on TA's less than UVA. I have had TA's here-for science labs but they only have 20-25 students/lab section. It's really just a matter of preference-my friends at UVA love it there. I just thought a smaller school would be better for me. It was just more of a personal fit.

Both are great schools!

Daughter was accepted to W&M and UVA. Older brothers are graduates of UVA and she spent three summers on campus for SEP. Also, W&M too close to home. (we live an hour away) She's dreamed of UVA since seventh grade. However, attending admitted students day at both schools changed her mind. She loves the smaller classes and campus of W&M. In her opinion, a non-conformist is much more at home than UVA's campus.

If you apply yourself, each school can open doors to medical school.

visit both... choose on non academic factors. The campuses feel pretty different, but academics are essentially the same.

last year, i ended up choosing between W&M and UVA. before i visited i was leaning towards UVA, but after visiting both campuses i felt a much better vibe from W&M. After a semester and a half at W&M i've been extremely happy with my decision. basically, visit both campuses and afterwards you'll know which one is right for you.

UVa for the more "complete" college experience =)

whatever that means ...

can you articulate, please?

He means lots of alcohol

Two sons, graduates at UVA. They loved their experience. Daughter, in her second semester at W&M. Honestly, she's learned more, had more growth, in her short time. Both schools top notch. Can't say one is a better college experinece.

And I'm afraid there is plenty of alcohol at W&M!!!(smiles)

yes but we don't make a big deal of it being a large component of the "complete college experience." lol

Daughter certainly doesn't mention it! Nor did she mention the tatoo she got as a reward to herself for doing well last semester!

Wow! I'd hate to think what she'd a done if she'd failed!!

Maybe 2 tat2's??? ;)

In a very few short years, when that full masted schooner with sails once full of wind and now in the irons and is sinkin' along with her once floating chest, she'll be tryin' to kick the behind that you were tryin' to kick last semester!

"In a very few short years, when that full masted schooner with sails once full of wind and now in the irons and is sinkin' along with her once floating chest, she'll be tryin' to kick the behind that you were tryin' to kick last semester!"

... What?

I think he is saying that the daughter will regret the tattoos when gravity starts winning.

Must be a parent thing, namtrag. I understood completely! (smiles)

Ahh college life...I have to say our quiet, reserved girl seems to have come out of her shell with a BANG since we dropped her off at W&M last August. As hard as it is for her dad and I to get used to, it's all good. Thank goodness the girl faints at the sight of a needle.....................

and these are only the tatoos they want you to see! lol

if premed is your goal, I believe I read somewhere...hunt it up..that Wm and Mary had an over 80% acceptance rate from their dept of Biology..which compares well with very high quality LAC rates at public school prices. I do not believe UVa students are accepted at this rate and I do not know why....find their premed acceptance rate and ask questions at both campuses. Tons of kids arrive "premed" at every college and then are weeded out or realize they simply do not have a vocation.
