@gr8expectations so, being in state, would you be able to describe what kinds of kids prefer W&M to UVA? Or do many kids apply to both and are happy to go to either?
Yes, my child received such a card today. We all thought it was really odd to do this, but also very nice.
Those stats alone are very impressive.
Daughter just received postcard. Weighted GPA 4.3, ACT 34, in-state.
Has anyone from PA gotten their postcard yet? Also - same question as one further up - what circumstances would a postcard not result in admission?
Another purpose of the postcard is yield protection. If by now students have been accepted to an SCEA school, or have been admitted ED but neglected to withdraw their applications, W & M wants to remind you to withdraw so they don’t give an acceptance to a student who isn’t coming.
My son received a likely postcard yesterday. Has anyone received e-mail about 1693 Scholars Program? I think semi-finalists are notified in Feb.
No info on 1693 Scholars. I didn’t even think about that too much but that would be amazing.
In-state here too. @homerdog they are very different schools. In our experience, UVA is huge, crowded, bustling, and has a top tier sports program. W&M is smaller, quieter, and quirkier. As they are arguably the top two schools in the state most of the top students do apply to both, though those seeking Engineering degrees will typically focus on UVA and Virginia Tech.
No postcard here yet. :(. Son had a 1470 SAT, 4.2 Weighted GPA, is an Eagle Scout, and had good recommendations and ECs. Fingers crossed it arrives at some point soon.
S got the postcard in Tennessee
Does anyone know if there is a W&M groupme?
@homerdog In my area (Northern Virginia) I would say more students apply to UVA than W&M and prefer UVA over W&M. Although to me, they are very both similarly rigorous, many prefer the “prestige” of UVA. Both attract very studious students, but W&M seems to attract more quirky students while UVA attracts more social students. I applied to both and would prefer to attend W&M, but I consider myself the minority. Again, these are just stereotypes, people living elsewhere in VA might have a different opinion. Nonetheless, they are both amazing schools.
Are the ‘Likely’ letters done? Or are there more coming?
They send postcards out each week for the next several weeks (likely through mid-February). @Bizdock
@homerdog U. Va. (my alma mater) and W&M (where my daughter is a freshman) are the two most academically rigorous state-supported Virginia universities. Both attract students with top grades and scores. U. Va. is almost triple the size, though it is small for a “flagship” university. It is not surprising that they get significantly more applicants.
UVA is more popular in the sense that more cross-admits choose it over W&M, but due to the size differential, if about 1 in 4 high stat kids in Virginia choose W&M over UVA, the two schools end up with very similar class stats. This has generally been the case for a long, long time. A lot of good students in Virginia apply to both, but it also appears quite a few apply to one and not the other due to perceived fit. I’ve always thought they represent good alternatives to each other, and VT is a strong option for engineering.
Does anyone know what percentage of RD kids get postcards?
From the W&M admissions blog: “What if you don’t receive a postcard? Does this mean that you will not be admitted to the Class of 2022? Not at all. Only a small percentage (roughly 25%) of our admitted students receive a postcard. This means that roughly 75% of our admitted students do not receive a postcard. So what determines who gets a postcard and who doesn’t? To be completely honest, it is primarily the luck of the draw. We do not read applications in any specific order. Because of this, some applications get read early, while others get read later on. Those who get read early and have extraordinary credentials are those who get postcards. Those who are read at the end of the process (for no fault of their own), and who present extraordinary credentials, do not.”
Last year my daughter was admitted to William and Mary, UVA, Washington and Lee and Virginia Tech honors and never received a postcard from William and Mary so I would not worry if you don’t receive one.
