I think people are beginning to realize the PC culture has swung too far, and this is especially true on college campuses. Destruction of property, people getting assaulted, etc., all because you don’t agree with the invited speaker.
Some of these students who treated Mr. Reveley with such outrageous disrespect are likely their own greatest threat. I heard a lot of grievances, but not a lot to justify them. If someone is scared to be on the campus of W&M, they ought to explain why (I can’t think of any external reason for this that I ever witnessed). If the place is so racist, maybe give an example of it other than that most white students don’t show up for the BLM events because they don’t feel comfortable or interested in being treated the way this video shows Mr. Reveley being treated for speaking frankly. If this video is an example of white supremacy or censorship … who is being censored? Asking a jerk-off student not to talk out of turn or yell is not censorship. How is a president who has openly advocated for increased diversity a white supremacist? When you lob such epithets at someone who is looking to work with you, you rob them of any real meaning.
Is W&M at the same point as Pomona or whatever school had the ad for a roommate that stipulated “people of color only” because it would be too scary to have a white roommate?
Aren’t these all things that a student capable of earning the average GPA and SAT scores admitted W&M have should understand?
This group seems to be upset that Reveley told a story about an African- American male whom he had known through Princeton. Reveley points out that although this male had an elite job and looked nice (presumably that he dressed and groomed in an elite, non-threatening way), he had trouble getting a cab to stop. These details in the story are clearly to isolate the reason cabbies pass him by – he’s black, pure and simple. But these people who only see things through the lens of their mission instead see racism on the part of Reveley.
Some of the people in the video bounce out of their chairs like bumbling Keystone Cops when Reveley repeats an observation that racism will always exists until all the races are completely intermixed. I don’t know who he was quoting, but I know Ice-T said the same thing at Harvard. That’s not racism. It an observation about human nature. We’re tribal. We tend to focus on differences and meld with those like ourselves, the same way different groups of chimps form tribes to compete for limited resources, mates, etc. If we become one united race across the whole world, future humans will use some other difference to divide themselves. Reveley’s statement also is not a copout. He’s just illustrating how deep the problem is and how skeptical he is of some of the proposed solutions the BLM folks demand he enact. You may disagree with his perspective, but to call him a white supremacist and say he doesn’t deserve to be president is to behave like a spoiled kid who doesn’t get the toy she wants.
Granted Reveley’s claim that he has color was a slip up. Not sure what he was going for there. Maybe something along the lines of “we all bleed red”?
I was never a particular fan of Reveley until I saw this.
