W&M Vs. U of Miami

S got accepted to both school, business major. Miami offered 50% tuition while we pay instate for W&M. So cost wise it'd be $8 grand per year. We went to Miami this past Christmas and S likes the place but we didn't visit campus. Now my questions which school would be a better choice?

Let your son make the choice. The people on this website know nothing about your son's dislikes or likes. W&M is a totally different school than the U.

Well, I have one child at W&M and one at UM!
I couldn't give you a favorite, because both kids are really happy where they are, and we are pleased with the many opportunities both have available to them. And they are both such great places to visit!

The 2 schools (as my children...) are very different - they each have a unique feel to them, and their own individual positives/negatives.

Maybe you could give us an idea of what your S is looking for in a college experience? Bigtime sports? Intellectual stimulation? Small classes? Internships? Intramurals? Volunteerism? Fun in the sun?

The UM campus is not in Miami, so seeing the city itself doesn't really give you a sense of the campus (Coral Gables). If you could swing it, a quick visit to the UM campus might help clarify the issue. I'm guessing you're familiar with WM since you're from VA.

Come back with specific questions!

Thanks Jps36 and CTMom. S likes sports (all sorts of). Academic-wise if he likes the subject he'll put the efforts. I think a balanced campus experience would be more beneficial to him but I'm little concerned with the U of Miami having the reputation of party school. Maybe it's just untrue?

I noticed Miami campus is actually not in Miami but Coral Gables. Is is a far different environment than Miami? And specifically, how are the business programs being regarded by the reginal and national business communities? Compared to W&M's reputation? And campus safety in Miami? Also is Miami considered conservative as is in the case of UVA or is it quite liberal?

Thanks!

TG - you might want to take a look at the U M board - these questions have all been addressed over there (safety, reputation, etc.).
There are several active parents on that board.

These are 2 great schools, but very different in their 'feel'. Best of luck!

ctmon thanks for your follow-up posting on UM board -- that's very nice of you. After reading through the 2 boards I'm convinced that S would get comparible quality education from either school. Thanks again.
