I’m an Orthodox Jew and it was a holiday Tuesday night through just now. I got a call from Princeton at 12:15ish yesterday, but I couldn’t pick up! I’m on Harvard’s waitlist as well (well, not anymore, I got rejected, but as of then I thought I was) and I assumed if I got off any waitlist, it’d be Harvard simply because they hadn’t had their first wave yet.

I wasn’t home, but my mom saw I got two more calls at 5:30 and 5:45. I just listened to the message and . . . it has a name and phone number and asks me to call back. Ahhhhh, suspense! But I’m doubtful it’s a call for anything else. I was wondering if anyone was notified by phone that they’d been ruled out, but based on this thread it doesn’t look like it. Maybe they’re requesting more info?

Though I’m not sure I was accepted yet, if you have any questions you can ask. I’ll keep the thread updated on what I hear. I really hope it works out for everyone!

I would send anything that you think is even somewhat meaningful just to show interest. Of course, it should be substantive. Tell them why you want to go to the school as well. It shouldn’t hurt. I know Princeton told waitlisted applicants only to send “breaking news updates,” but I broke that rule.

One fresh example comes from Princeton University, which reports that its yield of 60 percent this year is a percentage point higher than last year’s. That seemed noteworthy to me, given that the university is trying to increase its freshman class size by about 60, to 1,300. Nonetheless, Princeton told me it still had room in the class to take some applicants off its waiting list; thus far, 31 of 1,332 students on the waiting list have been offered admission.

iluv11alot: It definitely sounds like an acceptance, congratulations! btw if, the next time you talk to them you can ask how many more they plan on taking off, that would be great :)

johnadams that was very useful thank you. I’m confused though, the university said they plan on taking a ‘100’ yet so far theyve only accepted 31 :S I understand theyre still taking more but how many more??

Computergeek, I want to apologize: in retrospect I think my reference to Imtiaz Habib’s article came across as snooty. I was simply intrigued that when I googled your Hamlet quotation, I found an article by a Bangladeshi scholar. I wish you success with your unconventional measures! Princeton is a great place for physicists, and I think you’d make it a better place.

Hey guys! Just called and found out I was accepted.

So two things:
sharts05: I asked about spots left, and was told the admissions officers don’t know, only the dean does. Sorry about that; I tried.

But. . . possible good news for everyone here (drum roll?):

2) If I get permission (big if) I will be taking a gap year this coming year, so that would mean at least one spot is left! I’ll let you all know if I get permission.

Thanks especially wizzle, sharts05, and mrscollege!

Congratulations, iluv11alot! That’s wonderful news. Thanks for sharing it with us promptly.

Princeton does not give you a hard time about approving a gap year; indeed they set up their university-sponsored “Bridge Year” program specifically to encourage people to take a gap year (but the deadline for that program has already passed). Princeton’s conditions for an independently-arranged gap year are: 1) that you do something meaningful, 2) that you do not do college study elsewhere for academic credit, and 3) that you write to Dean Rapelye c/o her assistant Jamie Goodbinder with your request, explaining what you have in mind to do. Princeton’s deadline for that was May 10th, but they will surely flex on that for a WL admittee. They may take some days to get back to you with an official approval, but the approval is more-or-less a formality if you meet the conditions above.

iluv11alot: that’s great news im so glad you got it and i really hope for your sake you get permission cuz princetons a pretty amazing place as im sure you already know also thanks a lot for asking them on our behalf, really appreciate it!

conngratulations ilove11alot :) really happy for a co waitlistee:D
wellll keephopealive today I DID try calling…anddd was put on the answering machinetwice. I cant call again now -.-
oh well, they wouldn have known anyway according to ilove11alot’s news (thanks so much for that btw!)
my friends have been getting off their waitlists from other colleges this week, e.g. columbia, middelbury…I thought if it would happen it would be this week…but its friday and working hours are almost over. bleh

Ok so guys I need to ask your opinion on something. I’m an international student who applied for like 93% aid (it was suicidal at this time in the US, I know). Now I’m the recipient of the international full scholarship at the University of Toronto, Canada, which is given to two people in the world. UofT is ranked really high for humanities (12th in the world) etc. Now in the US, from the places I’ve gotten in at, the only place giving me the required aid is Connecticut College (50k per year). Now I know Conn Coll isnt as highly ranked, but apparently its a really good liberal arts college. So I don’t know what to do. I’d love some advice.

i called(again) and was finally connected to someone who was available. when i asked about the status of the waitlist, he said “we haven’t decided the exact number we are going to take off, we’re still deliberating. all waitlisted students will be notified by late june, about the decision”

so that kind of brings us to square one and its open to interpretation/
BUT I FORGOT TO ASK HOW MANY HAVE ALREADY BEEN TAKEN OFF, APPROXIMATELY. can someone please please please ask? I REALLY shouldnt call again, haha

Congratulations iluv11alot! That is wonderful news. Also, thanks for asking about the remaining spots. Hopefully there will be more good news to follow. Go celebrate!

adaa: If you’re international, you may not have had a chance to visit either place, but they’re very different. Toronto is a major international research university in a very big and lively city. It has a pretty strong intellectual feel, a bit like the University of Chicago in terms of both culture and big-city location. Conn College is a much smaller institution in a smaller town. New London is maybe a little like a smaller version of New Haven (Yale’s home) , which is about an hour away on the Connecticut Turnpike. It’s also about an hour from Providence, home to Brown, going in the other direction. Connecticut would have a more intimate, liberal arts feel with a strong undergraduate focus, but you wouldn’t have the diversity and the number of world-class researchers you’d find at Toronto. Princeton has some of the best elements of both, so that might be ideal if you make it in and they give you some financial aid.

Toronto is much colder in the winter, but winter in New London can be pretty chilly and damp.

Do you have a strong reason to prefer the US over Canada?

following up on adaa’s post about internationals applying for a lot of finaid (e.g. me) - is this a big factor? what happened to need-blind admissions?

Naw, don’t worry! I didn’t take it that way at all I actually found that to be rather enlightening! Thanks for your support, though. (And I do love my physics )

mikezy unfortunately VERY few good universities in the US are need blind for internations…princeton being one of them. mostly all of them are need blind for US citizend though!

opensecret, thanks for the post :) welll, the only thing thats making me think about the US, is the fact that compared to a large university, there will be a smalller more intimate atmosphere like you said. But this conversation has happened on this thread itself, so I don’t have any new arguments…guess I’ll just have to go with my gut! And you’re right, I haven’t been to either places, so I can’t even decide based on ‘how I feel on campus’ and stuff. Oh well.

as for you other wait-listees: another week gone! anyone else gotten in touch with pton for info, or better still gotten a call?
