Wait list and gap year question

Hi all,
I have a specific situation that I need help with, and as I’m homeschooled and don’t have access to a college counselor, I would greatly appreciate any advice given!

I’ve been studying French for the past four years, and I’m planning to live in France and work as an au pair for a year before college. I think that this would be a great experience that would allow me to travel, gain perspective and focus, and save money/research scholarships for school.

I decided to apply to colleges this year and defer. I applied to six schools, so far I’ve been accepted to the American University of Paris and wait listed at Sarah Lawrence. Sarah Lawrence is my top choice, and right now I’m trying to decide what my next step should be.

I think these are my options: 1) Is there any way to communicate with SLC and explain that I had been planning to defer my admission for a year and ask if it would be possible for them to hold a position for me in next year’s incoming class? or 2) Should I just re-apply next year after I’ve finished my gap year? or 3) Would it be best to just try and get off the wait list this year (i.e. send in new analytical essays as SLC suggested, etc) and then defer my admission?

Please help!
