Wait List Question

hi. i am on the waiting list too. good luck to everyone.

doesn't look too good. here's the email response I got from an admissions counselor:

"While I have no definite answer for you, we did have a higher than expected response from admitted students, and we are still determining whether we are able to offer any wait list admissions. You can expect to receive final notification in June.
Hopefully that gives you a better idea.
Enjoy your summer! "

has anyone called?

I repeat, no one will be called this year unless someone drops out at the last moment for illness etc. Its not happening so move on with your lives!

okay, first off, you have no right to be telling anyone that. You have told us that no one will be taken off, which is a possibility. Everyone knows this, and I'm sure at least most of us have "moved on" by depositing else where. The thing is, we love Barnard; we want to be a part of that community. Therefore, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to have a solid answer from an admissions counselor rather than some random poster. I mean, did you call? Did you write? You present no backing for your argument and you're just plain rude.

i agree with nataly. vladimir: it's not wrong to have hope, even fool's hope.

How do you know you love a college you have never attended. That is not very mature. This obession with one school is really not healthy. I repeat, move on, no wait list calls this year. Focus on what's real!

as a parent yourself...who are you to tell someone, no one less of your daughter, not to have hope in a school. we asked you to tell us whether you've called the school or not..just telling us to move on isn't enough evidence by itself to be so direct. its not even about an unhealthy obsession or what not..its about your credibility!

Stop acting like a baby--You are not going to Barnard--thats life--You can try wishing it but it isn't happening. Its a numbers game. By the way, I dont have to call Barnard, I got this information from someone in a decision making capacity who works there. Why are you people so stubborn. Why not go into the forum of the schools you got into and learn more about where you are going next year. Study hard and then maybe you can transfer into Barnard next year.

My D's GC called today. The response he received was a variation of "While I have no definite answer for you, we did have a higher than expected response from admitted students, and we are still determining whether we are able to offer any wait list admissions. You can expect to receive final notification in June." He said wait till June 1st, we should get a definite answer shortly after then.

Good Luck

I disagree completely with Vladimir's tone. However, in all waitlist situations, the best thing to do is to focus on your next choice and get the ball rolling in that direction.

There's a distinction between having hope for a waitlist and putting your emotional eggs in that basket. You need to treat the waitlist as a happy surprise if it comes through. Otherwise, you're retarding your engagement with your ultimate choice.

Best of luck to all of you.

anybody heard anything yet?

sigh

What's taking them so long? If they don't want anyone, they should really just say so.

Shrug. They may not know yet. Or they may be "bleeding" just a handful of w/l's at at time so that it's not generally public and they won't know what everyone's status is until they hit their target class size.

Now is not too early to undertand that while you are the college's clients, most still will operate to suit their own convenience, not yours.

And absent any knowledge to the contrary, you should really be focusing on your alternative #1...treat Barnard...or ANY waitlisted school...as a pleasant surprise if it comes through.

A friend of mine knows another girl who was waitlisted at Barnard. Apparently, this girl was told that Barnard will be releasing decisions (if any) on June 15th.

Again, this may just be a rumor, so do with it what you may.

As I have said before, and this is from an inside source---there will be no waitlisted admited this year. Thats reality but I guess everyone needs to hold out until the very last moment.

why take so long then? for the notice i mean..... don't they know the enrollment by may 1???

No, they don't. For a variety of reasons. And even once they know their enrollment...it takes at least a couple of weeks for stragglers postmarked on time plus all the yada-yada cases that aren't worth arguing about, then taking a look at the numbers they have and deciding what they're going to do can be a matter of extended multi-variable discussion. I've worked admin in two different colleges and few things are as simple as they seem. Add to this that the combination of academia and bureaucracy can be double-deadly, and bearing in mind that processes run at their convenience, not yours...you're lucky to hear by June 15.

Here you go--from the admissions dept of Barnard---

Number of students in the freshman class---450--give or take a few.

Number of RD students and Ed students accepting positions--over 480---

There will be on people selected from the waiting list. You can wait until they inform you formally or just forget about Barnard and plan your freshman year in a school that accepted you. Obviously Barnard is extremely not---there have been instances this year of better rated school taking students from their waiting list---unfortnately not Barnard. Its over. Fact is, they are scrambling to find housing for the oversubsribed dclass.
