In the Exeter waitlist letter, they said if they pull you out of the list, they will offer FA if you have applied and are qualified for aid, making it sound like that's no issue at all.

Well, they will be less likely to even pull you out of the list if you need FA. Unfortunately. Kids will not go to Exeter, but fewer kids will not go to Exeter if they offered them good aid.

So in the end they will not even pull you out, if they cannot afford you.

Waitlist exchanges will be BUDGET NEUTRAL. A student on a waitlist who needs aid will be pulled off if and only if a student awarded a comparable amount of aid backs out and goes elsewhere. A dollar in, a dollar out. BUDGET NEUTRAL. That stands to reason, because the FA budget is fully allotted.

That makes sense.

And I imagine that not many of those awarded aid will back out, right? Once you get aid, don't you grab it? Now it's off topic, but if you follow today's news, Congress is witchhunting financial industry executives. They are talking about LIMITING SALARIES for those employed in subsidized entities! All because of a few million doled out at AIG. Given the fact that many boarding school students come from such families, does this mean anything for the next few months????

Actually Pan, kids who need FA tend to apply to more schools (or they should anyway) and if they receive aid at more than one school, they have to let go of the other funds. That said, I think that schools must factor in a certain FA yield, just like they do for regular admissions.

One example from CC: Saer received aid at Choate, NMH and Exeter. She can only chose one of those schools.

I stand corrected.

We will have to turn down two schools' offers with FA in April as well (Different amounts of FA make the decision even more difficult). I think the school may use the money freed up to address appeals for aid or more aid made by admitted students first, before going to the waitlist. Not sure if that's the process, but from the conversation with one school it does sound like it.

We turned down two FA offers last year - including Hotchkiss which I heard later did not take anyone off the waitlist. So, unfortunately, they don't always do a tit for tat.

I would guess that the other reason for the waitlist is that there may be current students who do not re-enroll for whatever reason. Re-enrollment contracts are due April 1st.

In any case, being pulled out the waitlist and also offered FA is a long shot. I've heard a parent say they got exactly that. Well I guess it happens but probably rarely.

The FA question depends largely on the school involved. A need blind school simply does not look at it the same way a school with a fixed budget does.

One more reminder about waitlists: If a school wants 50 9th graders to enroll, they may accept 65. So, to even go to the waitlist, their yield statistics will have to be lower than predicted....most of these schools are very good at what they do, and many do not even get to the wait list since they always accept more than they need to enroll. The economic situation may certainly make things a bit more unpredictable this year however.

My word of advice as a parent with only one year of experience with boarding school admissions (so use at your own risk ;) ): if your child has an acceptance from a good school, don't pin too many hopes on another waitlist. However, if you have no acceptances, than you need to be pro-active (albeit in a friendly manner) to try to move from the waitlist to the accepted category.

Just as schools accept more students than they wish to enroll to ensure yield, many also award more FA than really plan to spend w/ knowledge that many students will have multiple offers and that funds will be turned down. Thus, just as cannot depend on movement from WL, cannot depend on movement on FA.

I'm sure the whole W/L process varies by school. Three years ago when S was applying, he was accepted at 1 school and put on the W/L at 3. He came off the W/L at his top choice and will graduate in June.

It’s totally appropriate to request a revisit… toads. If anything, it makes you look more selective, like you have a lot of options, and less desperate. It won’t count against you. Congrats to ur S for getting on the WL, though!
