Wait list result

It sounds like bristol is a seriel depositer, not more than one at time.

My D knows someone who just got off the waitlist at Reed.

accepted off U of Miami and GW’s wait lists both for business

This is a link to the wait list posting at Admissions on CC:

I’m watching these discussions to see if there is any activity at Columbia, where my daughter is waitlisted. (Deposit at Boston U, where she’ll be happy, so I’m watching these to see if chaos will come back to our life soon should she get off the waitlist.)

Am I wrong, or is this much activity earlier than last year? I was at a program at the University of Chicago exactly a year ago this coming weekend, and the Dean of College Enrollment said that they were expecting to accept 20-30 students from their waitlist, but had not yet contacted anyone. Harvard had announced that it was going to take 100+ from its waitlist, but nothing had happened yet. This year, it seems like there are already some major waitlist acceptance programs underway.

If true, and given the colleges people are mentioning, it definitely looks like the predictions about much weaker yields for non-tippy-top privates are coming true. Chicago is pretty close to tippy-top, and its yield in recent years is consistent with that (about 37%, with no ED). As of March, it had accepted about 6% more students this year than last, so if it is already hitting the waitlist hard that would seem to indicate a biggish change.

Grinnell couldn’t manage another over-yield like last year. I’m sure they heavily wait-listed this year. I think it’s great that they’re going to the waitlist.

In Chicago’s case, I wonder if they are affected because they are competing for candidates with schools that are able to be more generous with FA: the Ivies, AWS, et al?

northwestern

It will be interesting to see the final numbers and how FA and the economy impacts all of this.

I’m new to this so excuse the newbie question. You’re supposed to commit to a school by May 1, but if a waitlist offer comes along it’s OK to drop the first school and go with the waitlist school? Will a school offer aid to a waitlister?

Yes (though the deposit is not typically refunded) and yes (FA, merit unlikely).

Guilty as charged - yes we would have been serial depositors had not my S received a WL offer from his top WL school yesterday. we are DONE. Anyone know if our Villanova deposit now forfeit is tax deductible as a charitable gift?

If it is more than $250 you will have to get a written receipt from Villanova stating that it is a gift and you got no benefit from it. You can always ask.

No, it’s not tax deductible. We would all like it to be, but…

I assume the tax question was a joke, but your child did get a benefit. He/she had the benefit, as of May 1 of knowing there was a spot at a good school for him. You did not write the check out of charitable heart, but to reserve that spot. If you book nonrefundable airline tickets, and dont use them, do you take a loss on them?

S off W/L today - offer with large merit award - from RPI

How long does he have to decide whether or not to stay with the school we have a deposit on - or go with this one (forfeit the deposit - but it is more than made up for by the merit award)

Congradulations #theory – you must be so proud. btw, where did you deposit?

I’m guessing within a week. But if it is not in their packet, call and ask RPI>

I PMd you kay

Thanks mominva. There is no date mentioned in the letter, so will give it a day or two to reconnoiter then see what the drop dead date is

just when I though we were all finished…

Several waitlisted students on the Notre Dame board have posted they were contacted today and offered admission.

Members of the Stanford waitlist group on CC report getting emails and phone calls to GCs yesterday and today to gauge level of interest, but no offers reported yet. (Lesson here: make sure your GC knows your level of interest in a waitlisted school!)
