Hi. Any disadvantage to waiting for the Jan. 10 results (which would be after many schools' applications are due) to send a score to the schools? My child has an October result that we have not yet sent to any schools, as he is hoping to score better in January.

The schools receive them before you can see them. Your October scores may arrive after the deadline, which may be a disadvantage. If the schools superscore, there is really no advantage to holding off.

If the schools superscore, you will either want to send only the January, if your DC scores highest in EACH and EVERY subscore on that test (unlikely), only send the October if DC scores higher in each category on that test (equally unlikely), or both scores if some areas improved while others declined (most likely). Even if all cases were equally as likely, you would want to send the October scores as there would be a 2/3 chance they would be advantageous.

If your target school does not superscore or if the deadline is after Jan 20 (to see Jan results)+10days to receive requested scores, or January 30, you would not be at a disadvantage in waiting.

If they have a complete file (with the Jan 10 scores), you run the risk of the file being evaluated before they insert the October scores. How likely is that? I do not know, but it really is hanging it out there!

@Dunphydad you have asked this same question on several threads…

The best and shortest answer is: don’t rely on what any of us says here. Instead, call each school’s admission office and ask them directly what to do. Also ask them if they superscore. Call SSAT and ask them directly about how scores are delivered to schools and the time frame(s). If you plan on sending the schools more than one SSAT score set, just tell them that so they can make sure to include both.

My understanding is that schools with early Jan application deadlines (schools I know have Jan 15 deadlines) will take the Jan 10 SSAT scores but only if you tell SSAT to send the scores directly to the schools. If you want to wait until you see the scores before sending them to the schools yourself, you will do so past the Jan 15 deadline and they won’t likely take them. This (if true) puts you in a dilemma if the target schools have Jan 15 deadlines, you will have to send the Jan scores to the schools before you know what they are. You need to ask the schools directly about this, not us here.

If your target schools have later deadlines (several have Jan 30-31 deadlines), then you can hold back, wait to see the Jan SSAT score before deciding what to do next.

If your target schools superscore, none of this matters- you just send them both test results and they pick the best subscores.

In general, the best source for real information is to ask the AOs directly. They aren’t adversarial, they want to help you and they have seen everything before.

All, what (I think) happened with the SSAT in Nov is that the system sent the scores to the school one day before they are displayed on the website for us to view, is this correct?
For SATs, the scores are sent to the schools before we can see them. (if you had it set up for schools) Seems that the SSAT would be similar.
Thank you
