Waitlist at UCSD

I'm a transfer student that will be starting my first semester at UCSD this Fall. I was just wondering how realistic it is getting off the wait lists. I signed up for BIMM 101 Recombinant DNA Techniques and I'm currently sitting at 19th on the wait list in a class that enrolls 36 people. Naturally, I'd assume my chances of enrolling are pretty bleak, but I can say I'm fairly determined and would be willing to sit through the class for as long as it takes to get a seat, which has worked for me in overcrowded community college courses.

So my question is, is it possible to get off the wait list from a position that far back or would it be beneficial to just drop the course and try enrolling in something else. Also, do professors allow wait listed students to sit through the course or do you have to wait until you're officially enrolled? If anyone has any experience particularly in upper division biology classes in this regard that'd be great.

Don’t think you’re gonna get in.
That class is pretty notorious for the waitlists as far as i know. they’re very stringent on keeping the class a certain size. you can imagine how that works for a lab class, which needs a certain amount of space and materials.

Professors usually do let you stick around for a while but they are also often very realistic about waitlists and will advise you to stay home/enroll in something else if they think your chances of getting in are too low.
