Just trying to get an idea of what the chances are to get off the fall waitlist at University of Maryland, College Park. If you are NOT accepting admittance or a place on the waitlist to Maryland, please post. Last years numbers aren't to encouraging....thanks!

I'm also interested in this for a few of my friends... alot of them are still thinking they have a chance and I really don't think they do. When will you find out for sure?

Good luck and I wish you the best.

THANKS! We've been told by June 1st...last year many found out around May 21/22. D. has been accepted and will attend UMD for Spring 2006 but she's still waiting to hear about the fall 2005. I've heard from admissions it will be hard to get in off the fail waitlist if you haven't already been accepted in spring...don't know how accurate that info is...so she still is hopeful, but has put a deposit for enrollment at another school, just in case, for the fall semester. Are you going to MD?

I still havent gottten my decision..called them numerous times and they said that its gonna take another 3 week.>WHATT!?! im soo angryy

I've been admitted to UMCP, but I will be attending UVa instead. The size of UMCP waiting list 2004-2005 was 1,957 and they accepted 1,563. I think your chances are really good if they accept that much this year. Good luck :)

Thanks....good luck at UVA!

Where did you get these waitlist numbers? They sound pretty high, but thats great if they are accurate!!

I got it from the 2005 edition of U.S. News & World Report book.

Here is the information I have found regarding past waitlists at UMDCP:
US News reports that for the 2003-04 year, 1,957 students were placed on the waitlist; 1816 of those students accepted a place on the waitlist, and 1563 students were enrolled from the waitlist.
That sounds encouraging until you read the info on UMDCP site, reporting numbers for 2004-05:
2,530 placed on the waitlist; 2,331 students accepted a place on the waitlist. The number of waitlisted students admitted for fall was 180; the number of waitlisted students admitted for spring was 1328!
I suspect that the US News-reported number of waitlisted students admitted could be further broken down into fall/spring numbers too, but that info wasn't on the web site.
Still can't tell from all this how many waitlisted students are actually offered a spot. Hope this helps anyone looking for this info. Good luck to everyone!

That's a big difference in numbers!

D.'s HS GC was contacted today by UMD admissions counselor and told her "the University would be making their decisions about waitlisted students this week." Hopefully we'll ALL get good news!

I was accepted and im not going so maybe you can get my spot. :) Good luck!

Does anyone know what happens when and if you are offered a place on the waitlist. I assume they send you a letter. But how about the people who weren't offered a spot from the waitlist, do they get a rejection, or are they just in college admissions limbo? Is it possible you could say get a call or letter in August offering you a spot?

I wish the numbers were broken down further. I would like to know say for 2004-2005, 180 students were admitted. But how many from the waitlist were offered admission to get that 180 students? I'm sure if it were only 180 who were offered admission from the waitlist, all didnt accept. I would like to know the yield of how many students were offered admission from the waitlist and how many accepted. Of all the college admission books, I'm surprised noone has written a book about what really happens inside a waitlist.

My daughter was waitlisted at Maryland, and 4 other schools. She has sent her deposit into Penn State. But now she is kinda excited about attending Penn State main campus (even though it really wasnt one of her top choices). We'll have to see what happens with the waitlists.

If you are offered a place from the waitlist, they send you the Maryland Planner along with a letter of acceptance. I'm not sure what they do if you don't get in off the list. That might be worth a phone call to admissions. Glad to her your d. is getting excited about Penn S. ALL the waitlist experts say that's important.

thanks to all those posting decisions...very helpful!

AHH i Still havent heard...this is getting soo frsutrating...like 3 more days till I have to notify other schools..AHH

My S got into Georgetown and is going there but we are totally puzzled about never having heard from U MD. We live abroad and registered for the UMD Open House but while stateside earlier this month by phone were strongly warned not to come without having an admissions letter. When does Maryland's literature say is the notification date?

DCBoundWeHope: I also live abroad.. Im curious as to why we havent found out..this is very unheard of! I will be going to UPenn, but I was considering UMD as I am in state and woulda been cheaper! But it doesnt matter anymore.... Im more than happy to be goign to UPenn, I got a great financial deal from them2! UMD just dont have their act together over there! I would like my $50 back tho, since they didnt respond when they were supposed 2! I called them numerous times..and all they said was my app. was still pending!

Tamy02.... It's terrible you've had to go through this dreadful waiting, but it sounds like you weren't the only one. Glad to hear you are excited about UPenn and best of luck to you!

tamy, when I called while I was in Maryland, there was much scrambling and finally I was told that the application was in the International office. I explained that our school is accreditated by an American agency and is NOT a foreign school. I just couldn't imagine waiting all this while to hear if this were our only choice.

Yeah. I actually submitted my app before the Dec 1st deadline meaning I would find out on 28th FEb..but nothing..so I called them..and aftre much scrambling as well, they said my app was in the international admissions office..ever since ive been calling..they just tell me the same thing..and thats its pending! Im sick of it! And its unfair, whatif theres an international applicant where UMD was their top choice...this is absolutely ridiculous! UMD may just be hearing a mouthful from counsellor tomorrow is theres nothing considering they wont be opened on the weekend!

Anything yet? I consider you the expert on the Maryland Waitlist. Any idea when there will be any offers? I did a college confidential archive search, and it seemed like last yr students started to hear about now. My daughter is on 5 waitlists. Thanks..
