Waitlist Question

I didn't really know the University of Chicago existed until after the January 1st deadline. I added them to my Common App school list and found I was past the deadline. Then, because I listed them on my Common App, I received an email on January 3rd saying that if I was still interested, I could still apply and they would take any applications until January 7th. I had 3 basketball games that week, so my essays were rushed and not very good pieces of work.

I found out today that I'm waitlisted. On the website it says: "If you would like to provide any additional information to the committee, you may update your file in your UChicago Account." Should I send them an email explaining why my essays weren't that great? I also have a really good essay I just wrote for a scholarship...should I send that too?

I still have another school that I'm waiting a decision from that will come out next Thursday (it's my first choice school). Should I wait until that decision comes out, and then pursue further action?

This was a long post...thanks guys! :)

No, you should not “explain” the reasons your essays were bad.
The additional essay may or may not be a good idea–I’m really not sure, though I think for this they mean more new awards you’ve gotten and stuff–but you can just wait till you hear from your first choice. UChicago won’t accept people off the waitlist in the next week–they wait till they have received responses from accepted students.

Ok, thanks! I’ll wait it out haha

If you are very interested in getting off the WL, you should send in addition information - transcript update (assuming you have kept up your senior grades), one or two more recommendation letters, additional awards, and an essay to express your interest in Chicago.

To get off any WL, if you do not need FA you will be pushed up the list. If you could let them know you would definitely attend if you were offered a spot would be VERY helpful, especially if you could get your GC to indicate as such.
