Waitlist Question

My D registered for an accounting class that has a lecture and discussion. Apparently they are "tied together" during registration. She also got on the waitlist for a different accounting lecture and discussion at different times. She did not complete the drop if enroll box. She is 1st on discussion waitlist and 10th on lecture waitlist. This is her first time being on a waitlist so she is not sure how this will work for a lecture/discussion that are considered tied together.

What will happen if she gets off the discussion waitlist but is still on the lecture waitlist ( since the discussion and lecture are tied together)? Do both the discussion and lecture waitlisted sections have to open up before she can switch? Her concern is that if she accepts the waitlisted discussion ( since she will come off that list first) that the system will drop the discussion and lecture she is already enrolled in, and then be left with a new accounting discussion section but still on the lecture waitlist. This does her no good. Any insight on how the system works is appreciated!

I’ve been in this situation and had to drop because the lecture slots just didn’t open up. What she could try is emailing the professor (if listed) and asking if they’re going to be opening wait list slots. Sometimes they know folks will drop week 1 or that they have space for X off the waitlist. Sometimes they don’t, and she’ll just have to decide how important that class is to her–and watch the enrollment like a hawk!

I don’t think getting in the discussion will boot her from the other class, but that’s not something I’d personally be willing to chance–have her call the registrar though, they should be able to tell her exactly.

Thanks soccergurl. Anyone else have experience with this waitlist issue?

My daughter says with confidence that you will not be dropped from the original lecture or discussion until you get into a new lecture and discussion that are linked together. Now, she is just a student, not someone from the registrar’s office, so take her advice accordingly. But she is the “queen of wait lists” and has not had trouble getting dropped from classes before getting added to the appropriate lectures and discussions. At one point for spring 2015 registration, she was on *** 17 *** wait lists! Now it is down to just 5.
