Waitlist question

I thought it was universally agreed that the reason Columbia has such a low acceptance rate was because it received a larger number of applicants than Pton or MIT, and that a number of those applied due to the lure of NYC, thus the difference in applicant pool quality. Princeton usually wins a cross admit battle with Columbia and its yield is higher. It has a higher acceptance rate but most would agree that it is more selective than Columbia. Let's say next year Columbia's acceptance rate drops to 8.7 and Harvard's is 8.9. Is anyone honestly going to believe that Columbia is more selective than Harvard? No.

collegebound are you a current student at Columbia, or is your source one of those "friend of a friend" type things?

Besides, ramaswami is happy with the 9% acceptance rate, so stop causing more trouble for her. ;)

GO QUAKERS

there are people going to columbia who hadnt realized it was actually a good school?
hmm...

No, I choose not to go there. It is a great school but not for everyone

how is this relevant to the penn waitlist?

Maybe it is not.
Is there anyone on the Penn waitlist right now? When does Penn send out rejection letters?

ME! Still waiting after receiving phone call.

Still waiting, only minus the phone call. >_<

yeesh...crib, have you called your adcom after waiting for so long? and what was his/her response, if you did?

Yes. Final results out in early July. Maybe I will hear soon. My cc verified the call was good news. All I can do is wait.

My cc said the call was good news because it seems the school has an interest in me.

I'm waitlisted and waiting as well...haven't received a phone call or any information for that matter. Whatever. I got rejected from Brown, Columbia, and NYU so being waitlisted at Penn was a huge surprise. I'm already enrolled at another school, so whatever happens happens. Though, I'm not gonna lie, I sure would like to hear the verdict soon.

i'm also still waiting on Penn ...
have there been any recent movements or is the wait list now closed ?

Eye dee cay.

I don't know if this has an effect but the rest of the transfer decisions come out this week and I believe we'll have around three weeks to accept so they might take more off the wait list when they find out the final transfer matriculation data. A "heads and beads" thing.

Crib, if I understand you correctly, it sounds as if you got a call from an admissions officer in the beginning of May and that you said you were interested, and that your cc called back recently and was told that final results would be out in the beginning of July. I know your guidance counselor said you sould not call directly as it would be too pushy, but I am wondering if you should contact the regional admission officer your self. It sounds like they were definitely interested in you and wanted to know if you would come if accepted and that you conveyed that, but perhaps at the time they asked all the waitlist spots were already given out and you are on a list for the next available spot. But you need to keep your name in their thoughts.
I dont think it would hurt to get the email address of your regional admission officer (you can call Penn to get it) and write a note directly from you that says
Dear __________
I was so excited to receive a call from you in the beginning of May asking if I was still interested in the University of Pennsylvania. The University of Pennsylvania is I articulated my first choice and I would definitely accept if offered a spot off the waitlist.
I hope to hear news from Penn soon

if you're gonna email them, then the link above provides the email addresses.

Thanks for the info. But, I have done all I can do. Good luck.

I meant to post this earlier but have been pretty busy. I also recieved a phone call and a subsequent acceptance letter to Wharton (after having been wait-listed). The letter came on a Saturday (May 12th). Unfortunately, financial aid wasn't right, so I had to turn it down :( Good luck to all of you guys still waiting!

My cousin’s friend, a New Yor-Ka, said he got a phone call too. He also is waiting. :p So, I guess I am in good company.
