the lecture waitlist doesn’t matter, it is all about where you rank on the section waitlist. Generally, math is one of the most flexible departments on campus, meaning they try to accomodate students and open new sections.
Just waitlist a section that you think wont be popular or small waitlists (8am is your best bet) and play the waiting game :(

If i were #5 on the waitlist for math section discussion, can i get in? the limit is 30. thanks

Isn’t there a 10 percent rule for waitlists? Usually, if you are within the top 10% of the allowable enrollment on the waitlist, you’ll usually get in. For a 350 limit, you should be in the first 35 on the waitlist.

5 is a bit iffy. Are there other sections with fewer people on the waitlist? If so, consider those instead if you really want to get in the class.

It’s pure luck. Sometimes a lot of people leave. sometimes none. sometimes they open new sections. but if you are dying for this class, go on the smallest waitlist with the least favorable time - chances are people want to switch out of it!
