So I'm on the waitlist for Math 53 currently, 10th for the lecture which is 450 seats. That wouldn't be an issue, but I understand that you need to get into the discussion too to make it in. I do not know what position I am in for the discussion waitlist, but there are three people waitlisted and waiting for a spot. Worst case scenario, I assume I am in spot 3, for a class of 25 people. How are my chances for that class, and are there any alternatives? Is there something I can do increase chances?

Also, I was unable to select a CS61 discussion class, it says that they will assign me one when class starts... I had a discussion section planned out that would fit well in my schedule, do they just put me in any random discussion that fits? Am I able to give them any preference?

Math: Best thing for chances is to pick an unpopular section (one with a short waitlist), which it sounds like you’ve already done. Do you remember how many people we waitlisted for that section when you added the class? Otherwise, all you can do is guess… alternatively, it looks like there’s another Math 53, a miserable 8am class, with plenty of space.

As for 61A, no one really knows what’s going on. If they do randomly assign sections and you’ve got a scheduling conflict, just talk to the TAs and work something out… obviously you won’t be the only one with issues if they don’t let you choose sections. There’s also a chance they won’t assign any sections and’ll just tell you to go whenever you’d like.

I do not remember, I could be anywhere from 1-3 in that waitlist. I am kind of worried that I will not get in, and I do not know what could be a suitable backup.

Math 54 is filled to the brim.

People should drop - nothing you can do but wait it out for now. You can try switching into a bad section time later since those empty out first (5/6pm or 8am).

Assuming you’re CS, you could take CS70 (might be intense for first sem though), EE42/40 or 20.

For 61A, I’ve emailed the department adviser Christopher Hunn about the discussion/lab selection. During the first lecture, you will rank your preferences for a discussion/lab, and they’ll try their best to give you your first choice. Mr. Hunn also said that was how they did it in CS 188 (I think) in the past year and that students preferred this over a Tele-bears selection since most people got one of their top choices.
