Waitlist= Rejection?

I am waitlisted at UVA, Duke, and Vanderbilt. I don't understand what being waitlisted means. When I told people I got waitlisted at these schools, they said "Oh, I'm sorry you got rejected." Is the waitlist a rejection in a nice way?

The waitlist is just what the term means, A list that you're put on to wait with. If they reconsider your applications, they may take you in. Don't give up hope.

It means you are in the big waiting room in the sky, but the doctor will only see you if enough patients cancel.

Don't count on getting in to any school from the wait list. Go ahead with your other choices and put a deposit down on a school that has accepted you. IF you get off the waitlist, you can cancel the first school, (losing your deposit), and switch, if you want.

waitlisted + international + need a lot of aid... does that almost mean rejection?
