Waitlist success stories

I am really hoping to get off the WL at Columbia. I'm also waitlisted at Caltech and Northwestern, but I'd rather go to my current choice (Duke) over those. If I get off at Columbia, I still may not take the offer, but I want the choice.

Good luck, everybody! Hopefully tomorrow will bring us some good news.

d4r7h3v1l, if I were you, I'd take myself off the waiting list @ Caltech, NW (if you would rather go to Duke anyway) to give someone else a chance. But that's just what I'd do.

I may still consider one of them if I get off. I mean, I realize that it's a lot easier now to say that I'd rather go to Duke than one of those, but if going to one of those actually becomes a real option rather than a hypothetical, my mindset may change.

My friend was recently accepted off the waitlist at Brandeis and she's going! There's hope, (I hope.) I was waitlisted at 5 schools. :(

As someone mentioned, I think it is amazing that the waitlist changes where many of us will go.

Admitted1230, they emailed her the morning of the 2nd of May.. I'm guessing you're waiting for them to contact you as well, good luck! :D

d4r7h3v1l, I'd give you my spot at Columbia if I get off at either Stanford or Princeton

@ d4r7h3v1l:

Do you even know where you want to go, or did you apply to all of these schools on a whim?

You should consider the terror and anxiety that your peers are experiencing due to waitlists, and extend them the courtesy of giving them a chance at their dream, instead of you grasping aimlessly into the darkness.

how many people actually actively pursue the waitlist? all the waitlisted people that i know personally are giving up on it...

i know for sure that i'm writing one letter of interest/accomplishments (a mix of both in one letter), and sending tax forms, principal recs, and a progress report to cornell.

hmm... so chances are that Cornell is probably not looking through the wait list this year right? :'(

Does anybody think Brown and/or Stanford will tell us if they're using the wiatlists this year on 5/5?

Has anyone heard about Brown, WashU or MIT going to the waitlists? I know my chances are pretty dim, but I would like to know anyway.

uphill, thanks for the info--still not hearing from Duke though...

do you think Duke is pretty much done with filling up the spots?

i know i shouldn't be expecting much, but this situation kinda makes me really sad.

kwu,

No, I can't say I do know where I want to go. I applied to schools because I liked them and I didn't know where I'd get in. Indeed, my priorities have changed since I started applying. Originally Caltech was my top choice (after I was rejected by Stanford EA), but by the time decisions had come out, I was less able to picture myself there. Meanwhile, schools like Columbia and Northwestern have been becoming more appealing to me. Since my waitlisting at Caltech, I have warmed up more to the school, and I can't really say for sure whether or not I'd accept a spot.

I am wishy-washy; I don't trust myself to know where I want to go. As I said earlier, it's easier to say now that I'd rather go to Duke, but it may be different if I am confronted with Caltech, Columbia, or Northwestern as an actual, real-life, no-strings-attached, feasible possibility.

For instance, do you really think that somebody who got rejected from Harvard and says "I'll be happier at college anyway." would actually pass up Harvard if given another chance?

i just have a quick question--are what colleges say on the phone always necessarily true?

for ex, i called williams and asked if they're using the waitlist, and they answered they won't know until lat-may or early june-- do you think it's probable that it's true?

i thought that was a bit late... isn't it usual for a college to know by mid-may?

after all, i did call duke in late april and they said they won't know until mid-may. but they turned out to be one of the earliest colleges to take ppl off the waitlist.

Harvard using its waitlist, thats good news for a few friends of mine

Where is the confirmation that Harvard will use its waitlist?

admitted1230, i'm pretty sure Duke isn't done with filling up spots.
If you think about it, with so many people waitlisted this year there's going to be a long cascading effect of people getting off the waitlist. Say X person was waitlisted at Harvard and accepted at Duke (and enrolled), and then was accepted off the waitlist at H say early May. They would then accept Harvard within the next few days, opening up another spot at Duke. Continuing with this, if Y person was accepted off the waitlist at Duke because of this new opening, the school they enrolled at would also now have a vacant spot which they would offer a few days later and this effect would continue down the universities, domino-like. Sorry if my phrasing is difficult to understand :S

What i'm trying to say is that this year the admission "season" will be even more extended than it has ever been, with the time lag between when a spot opens up and a new waitlist student accepts it. All i can say is try your best to continue to show your interest (in Duke in your case) and keep your fingers crossed. Waitlists are always very difficult to get off, but you never know.

Oh and btw about williams being a bit late, I know that Brown said they could offer places off the waitlist as late as the end of June so...yeah

The list keeps getting bigger, and it's still so early. MamaBo, I didn't mean to offend you. I'm extremely sorry if my point got across the wrong way. I'm Int'l too, and I know what the wait feels like. It's great that you are involved in your daughters dilemma. I involve my parent as little as possible. They have no idea that I'm even waitlisted. I don't want to get their hopes up, only for a let down. Best of luck to your daughter and to your family.

I'm really surprised that there is no word on the Seven Sisters, not even the Sisters of the South.
