Waitlist watch

I saw the double waitlist situation come into play once, a few years ago. Young lady at son's school who was a talented music type was waitlisted at several selective LACs. She cleared Middlebury's waitlist, accepted the spot and very soon afterwards was offered a spot at Swarthmore, which was her first choice all along. The school had no problem with her accepting Swarthmore and letting Middlebury know the situation anymore than they did with her declining her initial acceptance when Middlebury came through. But in her case both acceptances came after the May 1 deadline. I never heard of anyone clearing the waitlist before May 1.

Northwestern is taking students off its waitlist(from another thread).

Someone has reported being accepted off the waitlist at Tulane.

I also read Duke and Vanderbilt from another thread.

Columbia Student, can you point us in the direction of the Northwestern wait list thread? I couldn't find anything over in the Northwestern forum.

word of mouth

Reports on the Swarthmore and Hamilton forums of individuals coming off the waitlist.

From other thread, somebody got off waitlist from Harvard, even with this year new financial aid scheme.

After talking with other parents during Yale’s bulldog days, I would think there is a fairly good chance of being accepted off the waitlists. Every parent I spoke with said their D or S was accepted to and thus considering other IVYs or highly selective schools in addition to Yale.

Someone on the another thread reported getting off Columbia's waitlist.

Tututaxi: it doesn't work like that because colleges know about how many students they need to accept to get the yield they want. (granted, this year is a bit unusual with all the changed to the top-tier's financial aid packages, and so many kids applying to so many schools....). But just because you know of kids accepted to more than one HYP, it doesn't mean that their turning down the Yale spot will open up more Yale spots for others on the waitlist. Although, for the sake of all those waitlisted students, it might be nice.... ;)
