Waitlist?

Has anyone heard anything about the waitlist yet? Is Swarthmore using it this year? I sent in my reply card, but have not even received confirmation of my waitlist spot. Has anyone been accepted off of it yet?

If Swarthmore goes to the waitlist this year, and that is not a given, it likely won’t be until July.

momof3sons–did you get this information from Swarthmore admissions via email or phone conversation? do you know if this is generally known information?

My son is a tour guide at Swat and asked the question in the admissions office. Of course, things can change at any time.

It would be better if Swarthmore just reject me instead of keeping me waiting for so long…

That likely means that they are over-enrolled and waiting on “summer melt”.

Of course, we won’t know the real numbers until the Common Data Set in October. I would be shocked if Swarthmore didn’t take anyone from the waitlist.

“Summer melt” is pretty much what they told my kid, interesteddad.

I also asked admissions around the second week of May. Then the class was exactly on target, so with expected summer melt, they’d probably end up going to the waitlist, but not for a ton of admits.

Got my letter today regretting to inform me that they will not be admitting me. Guess that means they’re only keeping a small number on the waitlist for summer melt…good luck to all of those people! :)

I got that letter, too. Good luck to everyone!

what is summer melt?

My daughter received her letter today. She had already decided it was time to move on and as she really enjoyed her experience at the Middlebury admitted students preview session, she has bonded with a school that showed her that they felt she was a good fit there. Swarthmore had been her first choice but she was about to take her name off the waitlist in any case. I think they were very satisfied with the ‘yield’ from the initial group of accepted students and don’t expect much attrition over the summer (‘summer melt’).

i hope everyone finds a place at a college they come to love.

“Summer melt” refers to students who fall by the wayside over the summer after sending in deposits in May.

It’s usually a small number and includes:

a) Students who get a late waistlist acceptance to Harvard

b) Students who opt, for whatever reason, to defer enrollment for a year.

c) Students who, do to finanical or health or family reasons cannot attend.

In the past, Swarthmore has been comfortable being over-enrolled by ten students at the end of May. That’s the order of magnitude of “summer melt” in a first year class of 375 students.

Hmm that’s interesting. I’ve never heard of that but it makes sense. Just making sure it wasn’t that Swat rescinds a lot of students because that would make me really, really nervous.

I haven’t received anything one way or the other about the waitlist, but I’m in California-where are people who got the letter from? I doubt I will change my decision even if I’m accepted off the waitlist–but it was one of my 3 top choices and I hate to think postal service problems made my decision for me

I am an intl student from China and I was wondering when I will possiblly get the letter(if there is any for me) Can you please notify me when you get the letter (if any)?Thx a lot~
