Waitlist

Kid was waitlisted a lot this admission season–basically to all private colleges (T25 and above). Has 99% test scores. Good grades. We’re full pay. Kid was so discouraged about all the WL (just across the board) and started focusing on the public ivies that accepted. A college has reached out to her (in a general email–not to her specifically) saying she missed the WL interest deadline and they are giving kid a 1 week extension to consider the WL. Is this routine? Does this mean anything? Given the seemingly impossible stats regarding WL at top colleges, I just don’t want to encourage more disappointment. We’re already down the road to moving on.

I don’t think it means much especially if it was a mass email. In any case, I would assume that it doesn’t and move on. At the top schools, the WL statistics are quite discouraging, and it sucks to be stuck in limbo until the summer. I took my waitlist as a compliment (as in, I was good enough to not just flat-out reject), and will probably turn down the spot.

Of course, you can go ahead and confirm interest, but afterwards, treat it as a rejection.
