I just read that someone’s kid heard back from UMiami on a waitlist What other colleges have already activated their waitlists? Have any of you heard back?
Waitlist notifications are wildly unpredictable. Some colleges will go to waitlists before May1. Others will stop and start right through summer. My own kid got a waitlist offer on May 3rd, and the next one was two months later at the college she now attends. At around the same time, she was notified by a third college that they wouldn’t be using the waitlist and it was closed. The best way of knowing is to keep an eye on the individual forums because people will sometimes post that they or their child got a waitlist offer.
You probably know this, but waitlists don’t work like RD. There is no “release” date. If, on May 1, the school is full for boys, but not for girls, they’ll offer the # of spots they are short to that # of girls on the WL. Girls, btw, who fill holes in the class they are trying to create. They’ll have a very short time to respond, and if all but 1 say yes, they’ll go back to the WL for 1 more. Done? Maybe, but probably not.
Let’s say 3 boys at that school get offers from schools where they have taken a WL position and decide to take those offers. Now the school has 3 boys to take from the WL.
Occasionally a school is oversubscribed to a point at which it knows there will be no WL activity, even with melt. Or they may ask if you want to stay on as summer WL.
I personally know a kid who got off a WL in August. He took that spot.
These boards are helpful for seeing if there is movement, but in reality, you (like the boys in the example) could be in a later wave.
Lehigh started from their waitlist about a week after their official RD release date.
I know waitlists are unpredictable, @Lindagaf . Last year there was a thread that tracked when notifications started, and when colleges said that they weren’t taking any more. I’m hoping that we see something like that again this year. My kid isn’t amazing about checking his email or answering his phone and he’s in a play this coming weekend. I’m just hoping to have a one stop shop somewhere to find out when/if the colleges he’s interested in start moving waitlist offers. I’m thinking that might be useful for other people too.
Thanks for the Lehigh information, @vpa2019 Now that I have 2 I can start the list.

Waitlists will be more accurate after the May 1 deadline to accept.
Wait listed applicants are hoping for the college to underyield both overall and in similar students (e.g. intended major, demographics, etc.).
Emory? Vandy?
Anyone think colleges were spooked by the scandal, which came out the week before most notifications, and held back admissions? The number of students released off the waitlist BEFORE the May 1 deadline seems to be an anomaly from what I’ve read on past years posts
Barnard has gone to the waitlist as well, one of my daughter’s classmates was offered admission the other day
