college decisions are turning into a nightmare. Do waitlisted students have a decent enough chance of getting in? And are my second semester grades going to make a difference? What else should I send Rice, I have not received any awards or anything for example, but I want to give myself the best chance possible. How can I write a letter showing my continued interest in Rice for example?

My impression from threads here is that it changes with the year. Last year they accepted plenty of students off the wait list, and started accepting them early. They haven’t been nearly as generous in other years.

I have the same question. Does Rice waitlist people often?

Got waitlisted too.

Wait, just to confirm, if I put my name on the waitlist and they have room, am I bound to go to Rice? Or can I still go some place else?

Waitlisted too…first Wash U now rice…really really bummed.

Nick, if you put your name on the waitlist, you are not bound to Rice, in fact you have to enroll at another school by May 1st and then after that Rice will tell you and then you can un-enroll from the other school and enroll at Rice if you want.

waitlisted :/

Waitlisted! first the U of Chicago now Rice. How much longer do I have to bare this???

I beat all of you. First WashU, the UChicago, then Rice…after getting a Vision invite. This is extremely, extremely discouraging.

I have heard of Rice taking a few people off of the waitlist. IDK about the other two schools. Keep your heads up guys.

Wait-listed…with you with UChicago too^^^^^

What do you think was the acceptance rate anyhow? Those 950 slots and 13800+ applicants make some pretty bad numbers…isn’t that a single digit percentage of acceptances?

I was also waitlisted at WashU and Rice… oh well, I got a Dartmouth likely, I guess this just makes my decision easier, lol.

Remember that they don’t have a 100% yield. Their acceptance rate will probably be in the high teens.

1314eternal, You are right it comes up to like a 7% acceptance rate. But at least I have yet to be denied anywhere. knocks on wood But I am being practical because all my other schools were ivies so the chances are slim

^6.9% makes it pretty tough to get in.
S also got waitlisted. Good luck everyone!

Read my post above. The acceptance rate will be much higher than 7%.

Congratulations on your acceptances.

Yeah, I also applied Ivies…but the situation is looking very bleak. Two waitlists at schools that traditionally register in the 10-20% acceptance rates will equate to rejects from schools that traditionally register 5-10% acceptance rates.

My essays most likely saved me from outright rejection…

Although I suppose my test scores paint the picture of an idiot lol

They say that you were qualified enough, but that there wasn’t enough space. Does that mean they admitted you, then decided a random pool of waitlisted people to be taken out? Because it says “your application was considered strong enough by a commitee”.

And if waitlisted does that mean you have no chance at merit scholarships?

I was waitlisted also. Very disappointed, considering how much I really wanted to attend Rice. I’m holding out some hope that I can somehow be accepted off the waitlist. I was also waitlisted at Wash U.

Correct. (It’s listed under the “Waitlisted” FAQ on their website.)

I’m really bummed too, but it’s kind of nice to be in good company. I honestly think Rice was more competitive this year than in previous years because of the rise in applications. I just hope that getting waitlisted doesn’t translate to rejections from other similar-caliber schools I applied to.
