Many of us here listed a very top heavy list and still got in. I really don’t think that this matters at all. I listed Chicago, Carnegie-Mellon, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Cornell, UCB and some others. Applying to many places does not imply a ‘lack of seriousness’. Sending a bland generic essay to ALL of them does exactly that. If you spend your time applying to ten schools and writing an essay for all of them, then more power to you.

The applicant pool is very competitive and adcoms sometimes have to look beyond the stats. They want the best set of students who fit in to Rice and will be happy there.

I think RypuAK has it right when he/she said

The estimate is % accepted x number applied, I think those include ED and the wait list, but I’m not sure.

2009:
9,813 apps
808 accepted place on the wait list
1% admitted from wait list
estimated # accepted: 2,257

2010:
11,172 apps
1125 accepted place on the wait list
2% admitted from wait list
estimated # accepted: 2,458

So no, they don’t do the WUSTL thing, which is roughly “Accept the kids who will go to Harvard and Yale instead, reject criminals and kids with learning disabilities, and wait list everyone in between.”

No surprise WUSTL do not publish the # of applicants offered a place on the wait list, because if you look at the numbers and the threads, 15,000 is a reasonable estimate.

^^^ LOL re: WUSTL waitlist numbers. My D applied to 10 schools and thus far has been accepted to all, including Rice yesterday, and her only waitlist was WUSTL. Only waiting on Vandy to close out the bunch and those are being mailed today according to admissions blog. She was offered Presidential / Chancellor scholarships at 4 schools so far, and will be waiting to see what Rice says in the offer letter. It will be an interesting couple weeks! Good luck everyone as you make your final decisions! :-)

I just found out that I got 17,500 in Trustee scholarship and got accepted to BioMed Engineering. Good luck to the waitlisted candidates. I may be one of the few who may end up handing my Rice spot to the waitlisted candidates if I happen to hear from some of the dream BS/MD programs or Harvard. So keep your hopes high. IMHO, there would be 50-100 people giving up their spots to the waitlisted folks.

Accepted at WashU, waitlisted at Rice. I don’t really understand it though… 2300 SAT, National Merit Finalist, and they offered to waive my application fee out of the blue.

I may have been hurt by the “other colleges” question (I had 9 other schools, including some Ivies) and the fact that I missed the first email from my interviewer. :/

I applied to more schools than that, and my list was pretty top-heavy. Yet, I named them all on my Rice app and still got in with a merit scholarship… the question and my list did make me pretty nervous before they released decisions, though. :)

I hear you. 2290 SAT, 35 ACT, NMF (239 PSAT), and perfect SAT II’s, yet waitlisted at Rice…
I didn’t demonstrate any interest outside of my application, but it is still rather odd…

Yeah I got WL with my 3.4 and 2200. I kind of showed interest by doing an info session, tour, and overnight stay but not as much as I could have, plus I live in Houston so I thought I’d be rejected. of course, with 2% acceptance off the waitlist, it’s basically a rejection. but rice is my #1 I just realized it too late so I’m really hoping I get in and get to go

So I’m confused. Does Rice factor in demonstrated interest for its decision? I assumed that since most top colleges don’t, Rice doesn’t as well.

It is a factor, but not a large one. All things being equal, if one person showed interest and another didn’t, they would probably admit the former as they have a higher chance of attending.

That being said, if you live abroad or far away and cannot visit or tour, it will not be held against you. I did not visit Rice when applying as I was living abroad at the time.

I got waitlisted with quadruple legacy… that’s a reality check. Rice wasn’t near the top of my list, but now this has me worried about my other schools!

Waitlisted!
Stats: 2350 SAT, 10 AP tests (8 5s, 2 4s), Nat Merit Finalist (with scholarship already), a total of 72 college credits, including an A in organic chemistry at the local state U, and massive extracurriculars including national level recognition.
Already got full ride at state U, and another school…
Accepted WUSL
Hope this does not “bode ill” for top choice school, with rougher stats than Rice!
Is it even worth accepting waitlist status?

It varies from year to year; if you think about it, it has to. If for some reason yield goes up one year all the WL people are out of luck. If it goes down, then there are a lot of happy people on WL.

Good luck to all of you. My son is having a great time at Rice, but if you came this close I’m sure you can have a great time at college, wherever you wind up.
