Waitlisted at James Madison University, will I get in?

Hi, I've been waitlisted a JMU with a 3.8 and a 990 SAT. I've taken an AP Class, Honors Classes, and a Dual Enrollment course. I have also taken 7 or 8 classes every year (average is 6). I go to a nationally recognized school in the Southeastern VA region. I know what you're thinking, it's because of the SAT, but at girl at my school was accepted with a lower SAT score than that (not an athlete). I applied to the political science program, I had a good essay, and an impeccable recombination letter. My extra-curriculars are extensive.
* “Every 15 Minutes” is an experience where students are involved in recreating a drunk driving
crash to make the impact of an event like this real for all students. I served as a volunteer and
acted as one of the students killed every 15 minutes of every day.
** Homecoming Activities include hallway decorating, float building, spirit weeks, as well as the
homecoming parade.
*** I traveled to Dublin, Ireland over Thanksgiving break to attend a private Irish school.
**** I stayed with my friend Gabriela Sanchez Serrano and her family in the South of Spain for
2 weeks and I was completely immersed in Spanish culture.
***** Pueblo Ingles is a program for teenagers from all over the globe to travel to Spain and
help Spanish teenagers learn conversational English in 1 or 2 week intervals.

I wrote JMU a letter telling them how much I wanted to attend, if offered admission I would enthusiastically as well as immediately accept, and how I would be involved in activities on campus. And another important factor that I mention, is that I can and will pay the full tuition without financial aid from the school or scholarships. My fathers friend is friends with the VP of JMU and has made a phone call. I am revisiting JMU next week for another campus tour to let them know that I'm actively interested. (Currently I have enrolled in VCU just in case I don't get in) I was accepted to 6 schools apart from JMU. Louisiana State University, Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, VCU, GMU, and ODU.. Do you think I have decent chances? When do people hear back from the waitlist?

I too got waitlisted but gave up thinking about because last year they only accepted 7 people off the waitlist. I decided to go to GMU. Good luck tho

My daughter is in the same boat. 3.83 GPA w/AP and honors classes, 27 ACT, tons of ECs AND a job. It just doesn’t make sense. Students from her class were accepted with lesser grades/test scores and fewer ECs. She was convinced she would get in there and now we are spending this weekend scrambling around trying to visit other in state schools she wouldn’t consider before now. She has been accepted to GMU (kind of nervous tho after reading all the negatives here on CC about it being a “commuter” school) and that is a big possibility for her right now. We are visiting some of the smaller, less well-known colleges this weekend.

My son contacted JMU regarding waitlist. 1600 are on waitlist this year. Last year no freshman were taken off waitlist. Move on with your life.

My son is going to GMU, as did one of his older brothers (the other went to JMU). GMU is a good college and is only a commuter school if you treat it that way. Though my son could commute - he will live in the dorm - as that is where the college friends are made. His older brother had a great experience there - still lives with friends he made there, and is soon moving to California with one of them.

One should never sit around waiting to get off a waitlist, no matter which school.

My daughter is in the EXACT same situation as you. 3.8 GPA, 1000 on SAT and taking two AP classes this year. She played a varsity sport, president of a club member of national honor society and Beta club. She’s also on the waitlist.

Go to collegedata.com. Type in JMU and click on admissions. JMU rates the importance of 19 different factors. ONLY three are very important - grades, class difficulty and standardized tests. This is all that really matters to JMU. Here’s my take on the situation. Your grades are solid and right in line with the average student that gets into JMU. However, your SAT scores are significantly below the average of 1164. Also, only one AP test is probably below the average for the students they’ve accepted especially if your school offers lots of AP classes.

My daughter has accepted the fact that she probably won’t get off the waitlist and has committed to another school. If she got into JMU, I’m not sure she’d go but she’ll cross that bridge when the time comes. In the mean time, she’s excited for her new college. Good luck!

And there are more positives here on **CC/b who say the opposite about GMU.
