A couple months ago I was waitlisted for Stony Brook as a computer science major with a 3.7 GPA which was very demoralizing. I ended up not joining the waitlist and went to SUNY Buffalo instead. However, Buffalo is extremely far from home and Stony Brook would be a much more suitable environment for me. Plus, Stony Brook is more known for computer science.
What are the chances that I will get accepted when I only have 1 semester of college at SUNY Buffalo?
Will doing well the first semester help influence my chance of getting into SBU?
Will they see that I was waitlisted before for the fall semester?
Good question. We admit very few second-semester transfers; typically we don’t have a lot of space in our first-year courses. You can certainly apply for spring, but we can’t really guarantee anything. A better bet would be to apply for fall. If you’re interested in Computer Science, make sure you check the transfer guide at stonybrook.edu/transfer and try to get the two basic CSE courses in; looks like they’re CSE 115 and 191 at UB.

If I apply for fall 2016, will they still look at my high school grades if I apply NOW since I didn’t even start my first semester as a freshman? If I want to use my grades from my freshman year of college, when would I have to apply?
Yes, we’d look at your high school grades and SAT scores, and we may, depending on your grades, need to wait until we see your fall grades.
Either way - if you’re applying for spring, get the app in by November, and if you want to wait until fall, March 1.
