Hi, I want to transfer into Stony Brook. I was rejected for the Fall 2015 semester, I guess the reason for my poor high school grades. That is why I am waiting until the end of the spring semester to apply, so that I will have more than 24 credits. What I was wondering was what should I do to maximize my chances of entry. I’m currently in SUNY Farmingdale taking Computer Programming and Information systems. I wish to transfer into Computer Science at Stony Brook but, I have no Idea where to start.
I’m want to transfer Fall 2016 also, if you want to maximize your chances, start some EC’s immediately(this could be volunteering, work, clubs, etc.), keep your grades up, write a strong essay, and stay positive. Hopefully you have taken calculus, and some sort of physical science before applying also.
Great question. Transfer admission is nearly entirely academic. You’ll want to complete 24 credits and have at least a 3.0; that’s your best bet, regardless of anything else you do.
HOWEVER – for Comp Sci specifically, dreamadream is right – calc and physics are a must, and be advised that we DO NOT admit transfers directly into CS. You’ll need to take two intro programming courses first (CSE 114 and 215), and then you’ll be able to declare the major.
Hope this helps.
Chris
Does applying after the spring semester decrease your chances of getting in? Since they probably accepted some people already. I’m in a similar situation except I had bad SAT scores, my high school grades were really good and I have good grades now in college mostly B,B+, and A’s. But I haven’t taken a science yet and can’t next semester, will this affect my chances? (Computer Science Major)
It could, yes. The math and science are really important, especially for transfers.
