For writing, there are only 3 spots for waitlist. I was wondering how it works, because I know they drop students who are absent 3 times, so do they add the next one on the waitlist, or the one on the waitlist that attends lecture every time?

What the heckk. Do you really get dropped for being absent 3 times?? Oh man… I think I’ve been absent 3 times for writing… bcuz i was “sick” >.>

Or… is it 3 times in a row? ahh… D;

I just got into a writing class since I’m number one on the waitlist so I would say they take it from the order on the waitlist.

^are you talking about a writing class for winter? right now, yes they would be taking people from the WL, but i think junshik is talking about if the class were in session

yes, I mean when class sessions begin.

i dont know if they’ve changed the policy recently, but when i took it last year, you were usually dropped if you didn’t show up to the first class. never heard of the 3 absents in a row, but i do know someone who never attended class and only did the papers who was never dropped. i’m confused with whether or not the professor goes off the waitlist online though because they usually ask you to sign a sheet just to know who is actually on the waitlist and attends, and from my experience, the teacher signs the add/drop card if someone doesn’t show up soo yeah…

For me, they always took attendance and if you were absent three times, then you were dropped or failed or something. I don’t know, maybe your TA is really chill or something if you haven’t been dropped yet for being absent three times.

To the OP, you could just take it next quarter. You don’t have to take it now because you still have plenty of time. But if you really want to take the class, then try waitlisting for one of the classes. On the first day, go to the class and the TA will usually ask who is not officially enrolled in the class. More than likely, there will be someone who will forget to go to class that day and they will get dropped and you can take that person’s spot. If you can’t do it this quarter, then try next quarter or even in the summer if you can. I remember last summer, they offered writing online so you never had to go to UCI; you just had to do the essays and participate in forums and stuff.

For my grad students who taught 39B, she was really anal about absents and deliberately told us that we were going to be failed if we missed more than 3. I however got really sick and missed 2 classes in a row, then I missed 2 throughout the quarter from sleeping in (it was at 9am). So yeah, but I created a good friendship with the TA and went to her office hours and emailed her RIGHT after I missed the class with an explanation. For me, I think telling her the truth, not lying, and contacting her right after was the best thing. It all depends if you create a friendship with them. The class is small so it should be easy to do.
