waitlisted...should I be worried?

Just found out I got waitlisted at CMC, which was a surprise to me. I got into UCLA, USC, and some other good schools. My application to CMC was excellent. But the truth is, I never felt CMC was a good fit for me and just applied to it for the sake of it. Do you think perhaps they waitlisted me, not because of my merit as a student or person, but because they knew it wasn't a good fit for me? I am creative, and my academic interests listed were likewise artistic. My teacher recommendations also likely spoke in great depth about my creativity. I applied to Pomona and Pitzer too, and feel a much greater connection to those schools...should I be concerned given this CMC thing though?

“fit” is a particularly important characteristic at cmc. of the special interests you mention, english, visual arts & film, none can really be classified as having huge focus at cmc. the waitlist is no doubt because they recognize you as a great student.

No so sure my man, apparently UC was really erratic with applications this year, according to my counselor. I applied to UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCB and UCLA and got rejected by the last three T_T. I also applied to USC, but apparently their decisions are made based on “fit” rather than purely on stats so I’m waiting on that too.

That being said, I got accepted into CMC which really brought me up, considering Berkeley was my dream school and I got rejected before checking my admission status. I’d say that fit is an important factor in more private schools, because bigger schools tend to look at the numbers. Anyway, Congratulations on UCLA and USC! Hope to get some good news from USC in the following days, good luck as well with CMC!

No, you should not be worried. CMC is one of those schools that has such a large and strong applicant pool that it can pay lots of attention to fit. They probably figured out the same thing that you had already hypothesized – that you were not such a great fit for CMC. Colleges have different personalities, just like people do. The adcoms want to get the match as close as possible between the student’s personality and the college’s personality.

I think the Admission Office is pretty good at figuring out who is serious about wanting to go to CMC. It sounds like you were not very interested in CMC, other than seeing if you could be admitted.

Anyone know how many people are on the WL? I hope it’s not some joke like WUSTL where everyone is put on the WL.

I got waitlisted too. I mean, I’m surprised. I don’t want to sound arrogant but I am. The funny thing is - I love CMC, and I feel like I would fit in. My debate coach, is a professor at CMC and coaches debate for the 5-C’s and wrote a letter, not to mention that my interviewer really liked me.

In someways, as a CS interest, I can see the fit thing being a problem, but CMC offers CS as a major and I also have all of the 5-C’s to take classes at which really expands options. I was also accepted to Cal today, and rejected a Mudd (no surprise there - my scores weren’t high enough), but I’m surprised at a CMC waitlist compared to UCB.

NuclearPenguin - CMC said last year that they accepted somewhere around 20 people which isn’t too bad considering the class size. I think they probably had about 300 people on the waitlist.

I got accepted to Stanford early and i got a likely letter from duke.

cmc was my complete safety and i got waitlisted. go figure.
i believe it was tufts syndrome.

Don’t be so sure of that - you may not have been a good fit for CMC.

Nope-

CMC does not practice ‘Tuft’s Syndrome’…they have no reason to do so.

Congratulations on Stanford and Duke! I remember your unusual name and unusual EC from Stanford SCEA. Obviously, some places will be more interested in some parts of an application than others.

You have solid scores, no doubt and the Olympic thing is unique. (But you said yourself that the rest of your ecs are “pretty boring”.) parent57 is right. It looks like fit was missing for CMC. They are especially looking for leadership as part of the fit factor and will wave higher stats and other intangibles that might be more of a hook elsewhere. They are known for that, to tell you the truth and you can feel it in the student body and the energy of the place when you step on campus.

I have a D with ties to admissions and I can tell you that they do not turn away applicants that they see as overqualified. Who would fit that description at CMC? They have way too many qualified applicants to choose from as it is…so it’s not necessarily a case of better or worse, just different.

Anyway, I only spoke up because I don’t want to leave folks with the wrong impression. Every CMC applicant is going to be given fair consideration without any games. They certainly do not know that you got into Stanford or a Duke likely unless you told the about it at some point. I’m sure they could tell by your application that you would get into many fine schools, as you have so be happy! No one wins them all and it is important to take these sort of situations gracefully. I would tell my kids that this is a character building moment.

Have a great time at Stanford or Duke or maybe Yale?! Good luck!

yeah, I’m thinking that was my problem with Vassar and Haverford- i got my waitlist acceptances today. granted, I didn’t put that much effort into their essays (I got burned out). But getting into CMC really makes me feel a lot better!

Waitlisted at both CMC and Pitzer
Yet accepted at Pomona

oh geez… am i that famous on cc?

Good. You’ve just proven the admission axiom that different colleges admit different students for different reasons.

300?? doesnt that make up their entire student body?? might as well send us a letter of rejection given the ridiculously miniscule chances of getting off the waitlist :frowning: :frowning:
FYI: I was waitlisted too

S rejected at CMC- was told by someone we know there that he had everything but leadership, which is huge to them. He got into UCB, UCSB, USC, Reed, Whitman, and a couple more, also rejected at Davidson, UCLA, and UCIrvine (go figure). Waiting on a couple but leaning toward Whitman or Reed.

cgarrett101-

Yep that’s right about the leadership.

Wow, though, he has some great choices! He likes the smaller schools or are you mostly worried about the UC system? Our S will be visiting Whitman soon.

Congratulations to you and your son!
