I was rejected to every private school I applied to but waitlisted to Rice.

I don't understand how this happened, but I have to make the best of the situation. The only acceptance I received was UCLA. Would Rice take into consideration that I would attend Rice over UCLA in a heartbeat?

A thread from last year had a couple people who said that they received an e-mail that they had filled the class of 2016 with 45 people from the waitlist. How many were on that waitlist, though, was never mentioned.

Although keep in mind that if the yield rate is abnormally high this year, which it could be, no one will be taken off the waitlist.

The best thing you can do is write them. Tell them about your continued interest in Rice and also update them on new awards, accomplishments, activities, etc. Mention how they’re your first choice even over UCLA, but do it tactfully (like, don’t use your acceptance to UCLA in a boastful way).

Good luck to all of you on the waitlist. Don’t let them forget about you.

I have heard that ~10% make it off the waitlist.

Remember that Rice can tend to be a backup school for kids that get into every school they apply to, so they then will let people off the waitlist.

As per the Common Data Set for 2010-2011:
Waitlisted: 2521
Students accepting to be in Waitlist: 1444
Waitlisted students admitted: 131
Not really 10% but 9%, but remember this is from 2010-2011 so it is probably much less acceptance for this year

But wait–if 131 students admitted–presumably they had to offer positions to a bunch more people off the wait list who then turned them down (stayed with the school they sent in the deposit on)? So clearance from wait list could be 30%?

“Would Rice take into consideration that I would attend Rice over UCLA in a heartbeat?”

^OP, this line of thinking will not get the job done. Almost every admitted student at Rice would be a shoe in at UCLA so you’ve got to come up with a better line than this…

“You should update your file in writing via mail or email, informing us of your continued interest in Rice. Additionally, feel free to make us aware of any notable awards or achievements since your original application.”

So if you do decide to write to them expressing continued interest, you could include something like “If I were admitted at Rice, I would enroll” which would demonstrate your level of interest. Only say that if it’s 100% true though.

Do you think the email stating continued interest is time sensitive? Do you think sending it tomorrow would be better than sending it in 2 weeks (still before May 1st).
