My daughter received the letter notifying her she was on the waitlist last week. We were surprised, her stats: 1400 SAT, 31 ACT, 4.1 weighted gpa, Top 10% class rank at very comptetitive very large hs, very good ec, excellent recs, excellent interview, (interviewer practically told her she would be accepted).

Anybody else on the waitlist?

Any insight to the process?

Is it significantly harder for a white, middleclass, girl from the suburbs?

My d was also waitlisted and is VERY disappointed- similar stats (1470 SAT, excellent recs, top10%, etc.). Also white, suburbs...sad. How has your daughter fared elsewhere?

She's in at a bunch of rolling admission schools, U of I Champaigne, Perdue, Illinois Wesleyan and Denison-Honors Program with money from both Illinois Wesleyan and Denison. Still waiting on Carleton, Grinnell and Kenyon. She got an letter from Kenyon that told her she didn't get their top scholarship but that she would be a wonderful addition to their class of '09 so we are optimistic but $$ will be an issue. How about your daughter? Any idea of chances off the waitlist?

I apologize for the delay in responding..mother's taxi, you know...in any event, she's accepted to Michigan, Wisconsin, McGill, Northeastern, and UMass. Waiting also on Carleton and a number of other schools. I don't see the point of being waitlisted if you do not find out until after 5/1 if you made the cut. Decisions would have to be made for other schools prior to this date. She's received some scholarship money...

I was waitlisted at Mac as well. It came as quite a suprise since I have good stats and stellar EC's. I had also visited and shown interest since the beginning of my junior year. My mom called the admission office today and they said they have over-enrolled the past couple of years and wanted to be extra careful this year. Apparently they waitlisted about 10% which is around 400 applicants. I was also waitlisted at Wash. U, but that whole waitlist ordeal is something else. I, too, am also waiting to hear from Carleton, Kenyon and Grinnell, Whitman as well. Best of luck to everyone!

It's hard to accept, but the more I find out the more I realize college admissions is a game and sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to acceptances, rejections and waitlists.

Acceptance at competitive schools is often much more than just a matter of excellent test scores, grades, and strong recommendations since most of the applicants are academically qualified. The schools are often trying to assemble a certain mix of students and it's difficult to predict admission decisions. Racial, geographic, and talent diversity all play a role. I know of outstanding students from areas near Minneapolis who were waitlisted at Macalester but accepted at other LAC's with as strong or stronger reputations. Our daughter was accepted at Grinnell and Macalester but waitlisted at Washington University while other white middle class females from her high school with lower grades and test scores but stronger extracurricular records were accepted. Your daughter should have a good chance at getting admitted to Grinnell but Carleton is harder to predict. Good luck to your daughter.

Thanks for sharing the information. My D was also waitlisted. She has good stats and recommendations from alumni, and was very disappointed, so knowing that other good students are in the same situation is greatly reassuring. Thanks, too, for those who remind us that there are good opportunities for a wonderful education in many places. Good luck to everyone!

It sounds like mostly girls were waitlisted. Wonder if they took too many girls ED. One of the other sites, I think Haverford, said something like that had happened there.

also, Macalester looks a lot beyond ECs and SATs in admissions. As a very liberal, activist school, it is a fair guess to say they look for people with those traits even above those who are "qualified".

Apparently, they are going to the waitlist. I got a call on Tuesday offering me a spot. However, I have already decided to attend Whitman and am extremely excited. Everything works out in the end...

Good Luck to everyone... Mac is one of my top choices and I will be applying there next year, I hope to see a few of you guys overthere. I just visited the Boston College Waitlisted thread and its even more stressful b/c the waitlist is full of people and roughly 1% will be admitted... you guys are all up to the college's level, and if not your alternatives are great. Hope for the best!

My daughter waitlisted also at Grinnell, just crushed. Excellent stats. This is really heartbreaking for these kids. All she's thought about was college for years. Has worked her butt off and now denied by one of her favorites and waitlisted by the other. Would like to have a word with a few admissions people.

My son was waitlisted at Mac, Oberlin, and Lawrence. He has excellent stats, too- but they are calling this "the year of the waitlist." It's almost worse than being rejected because now he is still in Limbo at two of his top choices and is going to have to try to see if he really still wants to go for them in some way or just get excited about the schools he was accepted into (which are all good, just not te ones he initially had his hopes on).

The ratio of girls to guys at Mac is bad but not quite as bad as it has been portrayed on the board. College admission is a crap shoot for everyone. We all like to believe are child is the most qualified but, let's face it, there are literally thousands of kids out there with nearly identical stats. You need to take into consideration where you live, especially somewhere like Mac, who strives for great geographic diversity. The admiited class of 2012 at Mac - 41% were Valdictorian or Salutorian of their high school class, average ACT of 31, there is no guarantee.
