waitlisted

tetrishead -- The agreement to enroll that my daughter sent to Carleton was very explicit in stating that signing the form and sending a deposit was binding UNLESS she was accepted off of a waitlist. To be clear, the agreement to enroll explicitly recognized the right to decide to attend a waitlisted school should an opening occur. I find this a very pragmatic and refreshing policy. I suspect other schools take the same approach, even if they don't say so. And for the record ... my daughter doesn't view Carleton as a safety.

That's interesting. I just had a little card or something with boxes I had to check saying that I accepted the offer of admission, and I sent in a check. I don't remember any extensive agreement written on it.

I'm sure your daughter doesn't see Carleton as a safety, I just think the "field" has become more expansive. More people are applying to more prestigious schools, and if someone is already applying to Amherst and Williams and Yale and Chicago and they figure they need a couple more, they're probably likely to "throw" a couple elite Midwestern schools in there. I doubt that it's some huge problem, because I've never heard of Midwestern schools having Tufts or Yale "syndrome," but it has to be something that's growing.

And now, I just realized that I never received my finalized aid award paper that I had to sign--but the aid office has all my information, and it says that the first semester is "Paid." I have absolutely no idea what to think about this. I probably should call them, haha.

Hi
i heard that Grinnell College closed its waitlist beacuse it over enrolled students this time.....has anybody actually been informed abt this frm the skool itself? I'd greatly appreciate if anyone would help me verify this info.
Thanks

^I've heard that too. They're apparently rejecting deposits from students who mailed them AFTER may 1st.

But remember, like this topic says, that a lot of these kids will have been waitlisted at other schools. As the weeks play out, spots at Grinnell will come and go. All you need is some luck, hope, and realism.

yes. I surely need a lott of luck ....
thanks for replying!!!

Yeah, I emailed them and was told that we should know around next week or so.

^Ahhh, really?! They said they would know more next week???

I really hope I can get off the waitlist...

Yeah, I really want to get in as well.

Has anyone heard anything directly from Grinnell regarding their waiting list?

I haven't, but I plan on emailing them tomorrow to get an idea of the situation.

OniLawliet: Please post what you find out from Grinnell. Thanks!

This is taken verbatim from an email I had from a Grinnell admissions representative who I've been in consistent contact with:

"We have released everyone from the list and asked 10 students – including you – if you would like to be notified no later than August 1 if space becomes available. You had said earlier that you would consider that option so I put you into the group of 10. That letter will be mailed to you today.

Obviously you are going to need to plan on going somewhere else as the chance that we’ll have space is very slim. That said if there is you will be notified.

I certainly wish that we had space. I know that you’d like to be here. You have my sincerest best wishes for a successful college career wherever that is."

So I guess they're keeping a "short list?" I'm glad to be on it though...If space becomes available, I could be at Grinnell next year!

And OniLawliet

You have been admitted to a fine, fine school, so I hope you are feeling good about that, no matter what happens with Grinnell.

Dude, congradulations. I did not get that email, but I hope that you will see me there in the future.

Don't count yourself out yet. They're mailing letters about the waitlist status this week. I only received the email because I asked.

So this is the official letter I received today in the mail:

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for waiting patiently for our response to your status as an Alternate List candidate at Grinnell College. We are sorry to report that we still are unable to offer you admission this fall. We wish we had the space to admit every qualified student who applied, but we had over 480 admitted students respond positively to our initial letter of admission and we hope to enroll only 430 new students.

If you continue to have an interest in Grinnell, we will keep you on a very short list (only 10 students) to consider this summer should there be space available. We think that this is unlikely but we will keep you in mind should it happen. We will notify you no later than August 1. Let me know if you would like to continue to be on our summer waitlist. Please email me at xxxxxxxxxxx.

Again, thank you for your patience. We genuinely appreciate the time and enthusiasm you committed to your Grinnell application. You have our earnest best wishes for a successful and enjoyable college career.

Sincerely,
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

and the usual head of admissions title

I've x'ed out my name and various emails and names purely for privacy's sake. But wow! Grinnell overenrolled!

I guess it's all just a domino effect at this point. A lot of competitive colleges have under or over enrolled as students seek out their most prestigious options. I think Grinnell may lose some of those 480 students over the next few weeks, but perhaps not. I doubt people will get in off the waitlist, but there is hope. I'm frankly very surprised and grateful to be on this short list, but I'm being realistic about it all. It strikes me as though Grinnell won't go to their waitlist at all this year.

Ahh I still haven't heard back from them at ALL. I'm going to assume that they have already told everyone that they want from the waitlist because so many people have gotten their acceptances or their 10 student list already

^As far as I know, NO ONE has been admitted from the waitlist (save one international student who posted here a few weeks ago). I would suggest you email/call them and ask them about your situation. Otherwise, Grinnell may have just decided to make one, singular, short wait list of 10 students.

It's worth contacting them.

i got the letter too!

i dont see how 50 kids can drop out
but theres always hope =)

best of luck onilawliet

just so you all know, grinnell isn't going to their waitlist this year. i was one of the 10 ppl waitlisted and i got a letter the other day saying they were still like 30 kids over enrolled. they "encourage me to apply as a transfer if i still have interest in grinnell."
