I’m feeling very guilty, but my son will probably be going to WashU, not Notre Dame. He wants to study pre-med / biology / epidemiology. Is he crazy to give up his spot, or are you just happy there’s one more opening now?

What do you mean about one more spot?

Hey everyone,

I feel your pain. I am currently a student at Notre Dame, but got in off the waitlist last year. I went through these message boards to try and find advice from former waitlist-ers, took their advice, and now I’m here. I want to help you guys too, because I know how stressful this is. So here’s what worked for me.

The best thing you can do is stay in contact with your regional admissions rep. When I first got my waitlist notification I mailed the card stating I wanted to remain on the waitlist right away, then shot my regional rep an email stating I was still interested as well. A couple weeks later I emailed Dan Saracino (the head of admissions) inquiring about whether they would go to the waitlist and also sent another one out to my regional rep asking the same thing. I got very positive feedback from both; both seemed really helpful, even though they couldn’t totally answer my questions. I also wrote them a formal letter (that I sent through postal mail) stating why I wanted to attend Notre Dame, why the school would be a perfect fit for me, what I could bring to the community, etc.

The important thing is to just keep your name out there and in their heads. The first people that get off the waitlist will be the ones that reiterate their interest to the admissions officers. I know this worked for me, so I would recommend it to everyone else.

I hope everything works out for you guys. I know it’s going to be a stressful four weeks of waiting, but don’t give up hope. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

This says there were 2,000 waitlisted. I thought my brother had received a letter that said there were about 900 waitlisted?

^
So did I.

What day did your daughter get off the waitlist? You mentioned that it was the first day ND opened up the list.

I believe I remember hearing people saying they got of the waitlist pretty early after May 1 - I don’t think any later than May 7th - but I also heard from someone on the waitlist that they would notify those who were taken off the wait list in waves each Friday.

Our son was called from the wait list on May 27, 2008. Shortly after May 1st they will have round one of calls (if there are spots available) and go from there. Hypothetically if there are 100 spots open they will call 100 people. If 50 people accept and 50 people decline they will start round two and call 50 people and continue until they fill the desired number of openings. If I remember right he received his information and was given five days to accept or decline the offer via a post card.

If you continue to watch this board you will see towards the end of the first week in May+/- people will start to post they have received a call (again if spots are available) and then in about a week following that there will be another waive of posts and so on…

Best of luck to everyone

2000 people were offered a spot on the waitlist; however, the letter that was sent out stated that only about 900 are expected to accept a spot on the list.

Still…those numbers are making me nervous. The link says that just under 4000 were admitted, and they’re shooting for a class just above 2000. Does anyone know if ND’s yield has ever dropped below 50% in past years?

I think last year’s yield was about 54%:

It won’t let me copy the link but google admission yield UND 2008-2009 and you will get the admission stats.

This was a drop from previous years when it was between 56 and 58% but still over 50% so if you are wait listed, update admissions with any new info but seriously move on to your second choice and hope for the letter or call from admissions. Good Luck.

Regarding the article and the waitlist letter:

The article stipulates 2,000 were offered a waitlist position, and the letter stipulates they expect 900 to accept the waitlist offer.

Couple weeks til May 1. Does anyone think ND will get to the wait list.

Tough to say. I guess it all depends on where some of those other accepted students got in to school, and how high on their list ND is. I’m hoping that ND does get to the waitlist because I know there are a lot of qualified people on there who have always hoped to go to ND. Even if they are only able to accept 10 or 20 from the waitlist, I think they would be making some kids dreams come true.

WestPaND,

I attended 2009 ND Summer Scholars and was also waitlisted. ND remains as my top choice and I will gladly lose my deposit to U of M if accepted. Where is your son going to go?

Did anyone else receive a letter from Mr Saracino thanking them for their interest and for getting on the waitlist?

^Yes; if you send in a letter/extra info, Mr. Saracino will send you a standard thank-you note.

ND is his top choice…he will decline offers of admission with academic $ awards from Marquette, Pitt, Duquesne, Oberlin, U. of The Cumberlands and regular decision from Penn State main. Good Luck to everyone on the waitlist

just know the difference between sincere desire and annoying sincerity. good luck. I selfishly hope you get in because I personally believe that anyone who accepts a spot on the waitlist and actually follows up with sincere interest deserves to be at a school than the one who has settled for their “”““backup””“”. But then again it’s hard to tell these people. And if you don’t, as I’m sure you’ve heard a few thousand times, you will wind up loving wherever you end up staying. It’ll work out. Hopefully the way you want it to right now. But once again college is what you make of it, and there are so many awesome schools out there and all have their positives and negatives. Sometimes i wish the winters werent so dam n long. and south bend kind of sucks. and not only are the ROOMS single sex, but the dorms are too. Best of luck to you though.

Has anyone heard anything about how many ND will take of the waiting list? It is getting ever closer!!

It looks like last year people starting hearing about May 6th from Notre Dame. Then they overnighted a financial package to them. So hopefully we all we hear something soon!
