Any advice from anyone for those of us waitlisted?

contact your local admissions counselor - get more recommendations - call local adm. counselor and continue to express your interest and ask them how to better your application over the next few weeks - it all revolves around your local admissions counselor - a nice personal written letter expressing interest may also work

Why do you say that it “all revolves around your local adcom”? Are they the only ones making the decision?

My son was waitlisted initially. He emailed the admissions counselor telling her ND was still his first choice, and that he would definitely attend if accepted. He gave her some additional info (mainly grades from the college classes he was taking that were new since the application). There is a form to return that you sign to keep your spot on the waitlist that came with your letter. He faxed that the next day, but they apparently never received it so he got an email a week later asking if he was still interested!

The call from his admissions counselor came about 9PM the first week in May that he was in.
That’s all he did, but I agree that it wouldn’t hurt to send anything else that is new and strengthens your application. I’m sure your admissions counselor is not the only one making the decision, but he or she is your advocate for the final vote.

Good luck! My son is so happy at Notre Dame.

The way that ND admissions work is that your local admissions counselor is your advocator and tries to sell you to ND. They have dealt with the process before and know what it takes to get in via the waitlist. At the end of the day, if your local admissions counselor gets to know you, you will be much better off. Give them a call and they will direct you from there.

I too am wait listed. How do I find the name of my local admissions counselor?

it is online at ND’s website

Thanks. I found the local admissions counselor’s name and an email on the website.

I too was waitlisted and have decided to remain on.

Does anyone know how many were taken off last year? I know it says that 0-250 have been taken in the past.

Most letters I received said something along the lines that this year’s pool had the largest amount of applications. Could this potentially help us on the waiting list because ND had students apply there mainly to just see if they could use ND as a safety school and now those students are looking elsewhere?

Is the ACT still as important a factor in the waiting list process than in regular admission? I was surprised to see students with a higher ACT than me were denied. I’m just hopeful they look at the bigger picture!

THANKS!

I’m trying to figure out how they determine who they contact first for the waitlist - because even if they say they establish no rank order to their wait list there has to be SOME methodology to deciding who gets the lucky phone call first. I read online that for fall 2008 enrollment, they waitlisted nearly 1200, offered a spot to nearly 700, and enroll about 190.

I am a current student at ND and my younger brother was waitlisted

Still leaves the door open a bit for him though, which is good. I’ve heard so many mixed things about being waitlisted. Any other advice for people who have been placed on the waiting list?

A bigger application pool will make it harder to get off the waitlist I would think. Not too many people consider ND a safety. Fill out the card, contact your regional rep to express continued interest. Should you have any additional information that is not in your file (awards, honors) send that along to your rep. Send any additional grades that come in also (3rd quarter). Last year my son was waitlisted (he was a 3rd generation legacy with 7 relatives that attended ND). His regional rep told him the way that they pull kids off a waitlist is by “creating a class”. They are looking for kids with all different types of interests. If they feel they need a female interested in the arts, they go to those applicants. My son was a bright, athletic, white, male from the Northeast (lots of them on waitlist). Last year they kept some kids on an extended waitlist through the better part of the summer. He was put on that list and received a letter in late July that they were not taking anymore from the list. By that point he had moved on but disappointed just the same. My advice to those of you on the list: make contact with your regional rep to add any info to file, then every few weeks or so, either email or call your rep to see if they have any info regarding movement off the list. My son’s rep had him send a “Why ND” essay to her so she could include it in the file. Just one more essay to express why ND is first choice. After that, all you can do is wait and hope. As a parent, my suggestion to you is to move forward as if you are not getting off the list. Should you get into your second choice school start to think of yourself as going to that school. It is very difficult to feel like you are in limbo. At some point you have to force yourself to move on rather than just waiting. Should you get in off the list, that is a bonus. It all works out in the end. My son got into his second choice (Wake Forest) and is extremely happy there. We asked him if he wanted to consider a transfer when he was home in Nov. and he said no, that he thought he had found everything he was looking for from a college experience. Trust me, I know how disappointing it is when you are wait listed or rejected. My son had wanted to go to ND since he was about 5 years old and everyone is our family has gone there so it made it that much harder for him. But, there are lots of great colleges out there where you can have a wonderful college experience. Good Luck to all of you waiting, it is the hardest part.

If you are wait listed and then accepted, how does it affect the financial aid that Notre Dame offers you? Do they use it all up on the initially admitted students?

2 years ago my daughter was waitlisted and now a very happy sophomore at ND. It is a heartwrenching time for all of you that have to go through this. I know. Here is my daughters experince. She received the waitlisted card. She returned the card and sent a letter explaining to ND how badly she wanted to attend and how she fit the mission statement of the University. She received a letter back from Dan Sarcino, not the standard form one but an actual letter thanking her for reviewing and understanding the mission of the University with a few personal comments about her letter. Anyone that sends an additional letter will receive within a few days a letter thanking them for their continued interest. She received a call the first day that they took waitlisted candidates and her admissions officer told her she was the first one that they took from the waitlist. My daughter has her waitlisted letter posted in her dorm room to this day always reminding her that she needs to do better each and everyday. There are alot of excellent students at ND and it is extremely academically competitive especially in the science area. Although I love ND sometimes I feel it could be easier at a less strong academic school and she wouldn’t be constantly concerned about Medical School. Again I wish you all the best. If someone has anymore questions about the waitlist process please let me know via private message. I know another CC helped me and my daughter out through this same process 2 years ago.

Deferred –> Waitlisted.

Did your daughter get financial aid?

Yes, she did and it is the most generous package she had received from her top 3 schools, ND, BC and Ohio State.

waitingseemslong,

I sent you a pm…don’t know if it got through though.

Anyone waitlisted here that attended Summer Scholars in 2009?
My son was there in the Life Sciences trac. He is on the wait list now.

I am waitlisted too. I was deferred from early action so it seems like I been “waiting” forever. I e-mailed a my mid-term grades, awards, etc. in January when I was deferred. I will send in 3rd quarter grades. If I write a “Why Notre Dame” essay and get more recommendations do you think it matters if you e-mail or should it be hard copy. Do you send to admission counselor attention? Next week I will re-visit my second choice school and in the back of my mind I am still holding on to hope of getting in to ND.
