I got waitlisted at Stanford. Very excited and I do plan on accepting a spot on the waitlist. However, I do have to send a deposit somewhere because I highly doubt I'll get off the waitlist. Most likely I'll enroll at either Tufts or Wellesley before May 1st.

However, I have absolutely no idea what to do with immigration and my F-1. Do I go ahead and apply for an F-1 with Tufts or Wellesley? What if I get into Stanford - do I have to reapply for a visa as a Stanford student?

I'm an absolute novice when it comes to international immigration issues so I'd appreciate any help with this trivial matter. Thanks!

Bubbles, I’m going to a lecture about student visas on April 9 at my local EducationUSA center. I have the same question, so I’ll make the guy from the embassy answer this!

Yeah I am in the same situation. Stanford waitlist, so they told me to send a deposit to school, but didn’t mention if I should initiate a visa process using the school’s I-20 form

Go ahead and apply for a visa with the college you expect to enroll in. If you get off the waitlist at Stanford after you got your visa, you contact both colleges and ask them to transfer your SEVIS record to Stanford. Stanford will then issue you an updated I-20 form.

You don’t have to reapply for a visa. All you need is this new I-20 that’s connected to the same SEVIS record. If Stanford happens to send you an I-20 before they get your SEVIS record, do NOT use this form. That means they started a new SEVIS record for you, which is not connected to the visa you already got.

One thing to note is that after this process is complete, the visa foil in your passport will carry the name of the wrong college. That doesn’t matter at all. This happens in other instances as well: when a student transfers, when he/she goes from undergraduate to graduate school without reapplying for a visa (which is not necessary as long as he stays in the country and remains in valid student status), etc. In all these instances, only the SEVIS record needs to be transferred and an updated I-20 generated.

B@r!um, I’ve been on CC for several years, and I have to say that you are BY FAR the most helpful member I’ve ever seen on here. I’m not even kidding.

Is there some kind of award we can give you? Seriously! Thanks a lot! That helps so much!

Indeed, B@r!um, thanks a lot. What if I am going to leave in mid-May? The waitlist decisions usually come closer to the end of May, and if I leave earlier (visiting first), do I need to come back to switch the visa SEVIS thing from one university to another (if I get in through the waitlist, that is)?

thanx dude. u solved one of my problem. but i have another question as well. I hope you solve will solve it.
Well, I have got acceptance from WPI and I am going to accept this offer. But I am waitlisted at tufts and I will prefer tufts over WPI. Along with this, I am admitted into Oxford University but I am waiting for the scholarship decision which is due in August. So now tell me that If I apply for WPI visa, and later I get admitted into tufts, can I go for tufts visa by the process you mentioned above? and secondly, if by august i come to know that I have got the Oxford Scholarship, and ofcorse, I would go for Oxford thn, Can I apply for two student visas without any issue and chose oxford?
I hope you are able to answer this question.
