Waitlisting

What happens if your desired class is still on waitlist once the Fall semester begin? Do you just wait until telebear says you're now enrolled? Or what will something else happen?

Thanks!

First, it is very important to attend, especially the first few sessions, as the instructors often drop no-shows. That helps get people in from the waitlist, but it also gets people off the waitlist if they aren’t really interested so your position improves.

You may have to attend the class and keep up, even though not registered, in the hope or expectation you will clear the list. The deadline for dropping is 5th week (some high demand classes it is 2nd week), at which point you often see another jump in waitlist clearing. September 3rd is for the high demand drops, September 10th is the date to avoid any change fees so more drop then, and Sept 24 is the regular drop deadline. Some people attend one or two sections and decide they hate the subject, the professor, their GSI, or the syllabus, so they drop in the first week. You also get cascade effects where someone is in this class but waitlisted on another course. When they clear into their other course, they drop this one and now you might clear the waitlist.

If you are below minimum units without this, generally you register in a DeCal or two to get to minimum and drop those if you get in (or have some other plan B coursework).

It depends on the class. If it’s a small class, yes, attendance does matter.
