Waitlisting

So from what I read, if you are waitlisted, you found out after May 1st, and should make a deposit down on a college until you find out about the other colleges. My only problem with that is, my family and I don't have the money to put down on a school if it is non-refundable, but I would really want the opportunity to get a second chance though. Any suggestions?

bump......

Well, I don't think there's any way around the deposit unless you talk to the school to whom you have to send a deposit. If it would put your family under that much financial strain, then maybe your financial aid could be used to cover it. When you're talking to the school though, don't mention you're on the waitlist at another school.

I don't think that you should call the school you are paying the deposit to... INSTEAD, i would call the school you are waitlisted at. Explain to them that you really want to go there, etc., but that if you are accepted you don't think you your family can afford to lose the deposit. this might be a call to make if you get in off the waitlist.... if you are a candidate for fin aid at this school, they MIGHT be willing to pay it... however, this seems unlikely. i don't think there is any way that the school you are paying the deposit to will refund it to you so you can go to another school... sorry.

How do colleges treat people that don't give the deposit? What if you tell the first school that you simply can't pay the deposit?

They'll probably just tell you that the deposit will be credited to your tuition and returned if your financial aid covers it. All I can say is if you can only afford the deposit at one school - go with the school that accepted you and don't stay on the waitlist on other schools.

Well if the deposit will be credited to your tuition, then why not just do that, and then if you don't end up going, then you'll never have to pay
