waitlists and you

So I'm seeing a lot of people who are on waitlists, wondering what they should do next.

Just to consolidate, here's what my view is on what a waitlisted applicant should do. CC's own blog posts matches what my first instinct would have been, anyway.

College Admissions: Deferral and Waitlists

The gist is:

1) How badly do you want to go to NYU? Are you really willing to wait? Will you ABSOLUTELY ATTEND if you are offered a seat?

If the answer is "not really" or "I'm not sure". Stop. Back away from the thread. Send the deposit to your other school and walk away. You should NOT aggressively pursue a seat at a college if you are not sure you will even attend.

2) Call the admissions office and see if you can find someone to TALK to. Barring that, someone you can email.

3) Have you received any stellar awards since you've applied? Received a scholarship? Drastically improved a grade? Tell that person. Write them an email. Polish yourself up and make yourself look amazing. Tell the admissions officer that [insert NYU school here] is your absolute number one choice and you will definitely go if you are accepted.

4) If you can, get a teacher/coach/whoever to write one more recommendation saying that you are an amazing/awesome/perfect fit for [whatever NYU school you're waitlisted for].

That's all you can do. But seriously think about step one and be one hundred percent honest with yourself. Are you really willing to wait?

Good luck, everyone. It's harder to do this at NYU, where a majority of applicants accept their offers.

decided to attend Michigan…I’m going to send in my deposit to the school, but I’ve always wanted to attend NYU. But I’m guessing it’s too expensive for me as an international student. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I get off the waitlist, but for now, I’m for michigan. Still waiting for my Ross decision. :)

I just read the College Admissions: Deferral and Waitlists by Dave Barry. He suggests the student contact the admissions department. Should the high school GC do that?

bumping for waitlisted applicants

Thanks for that link! Muchos helpful :]

Is there any more advice you’d be able to provide missamericanpie? I got waitlisted at Stern. However I have a friend there as a freshman right now who’s doing real well. Do you think asking her to put in a good word for me would have any affect at all?

…Wow I sound desperate.
Oh screw it, I AM desperate to get in!!! @_@

yep, I’m going to UCLA, wouldnt have been able to pay for NYU anyways. :frowning:
This is kind of like being broken up with and having to “wait” for the love of your life, not knowing if you’ll ever get back together… ■■■.

@oranges12
Do you think an undergraduate at Stern will have ANY affect on the admission process?

Anyways good luck.

Full disclosure: I’m waitlisted at Stern too.

@Linnus:
Honestly? Not at all.
But like I said, I’m desperate! I’m willing to try everything I possibly can do to improve my chances :]

Blarghhh good luck to the both of us in getting in Stern!

i was waitlisted for gallatin. i reserved my spot on the wait list but i was wondering, if i do get in, how do you deal with housing and all that? i mean i probably wouldn’t get my first choice in housing right…

If I decided to join the NYU waiting list, and Emory needs their commitment deposit by May 1, how am I supposed to know if NYU will accept me, which if they do, will be after May 1st. So if I wait, I can’t pay my deposit to Emory right? but then they need my decision by May 1st. what am I supposed to do?

^Your only option is to go ahead and pay your deposit for Emory (if that’s your next choice if NYU doesn’t take you). Colleges are fully aware of this situation, BTW. If you do end up getting accepted to NYU, I think you just have to deal with losing that deposit - but I’m not positive about this.
