I am in the process of applying to the Merchant Marine Academy and I have a question. I finished my DodMERB test recently and I got a letter saying I failed to have vision correctable to 20/20. The letter said I can still try to get a waiver, but does this means that my chances of getting into the academy are low now? How hard is it to get a waiver?

It doesn’t hurt your chances of getting in as long as you get the waiver. Just follow the DODMERB procedure for getting a waiver. They accused me of having asthma and i had to go to multiple doctors to prove i never had asthma and to get the waiver…according to DODMERB I still have asthma but hey what to doctors know. Its a long process but it can be done and you’ll be able to get in.

Not sure what you mean by “Try to get a waiver”. The above post is correct, the physical is sort of pass/fail. If you pass (get the waiver) there is no negative impact to your application. But I thought the waiver request was submitted automatically. What are they saying you need to do to ‘try’ for the waiver?

There is a link there for DodMERB. The moderator under the DodMERB link just retired from DoDMERB and can help you with any questions. Good luck!!!

Larry Mullen is the GO TO guy for DODMERB info. He is the best!!
