Wake Forest Full Ride or UNC Honors College?

Hi everyone! I wanted to hear your thoughts on where you think I should go.

As of right now, I have full tuition and a little more at Wake Forest through different scholarships and grant money, but half of my tuition comes from a scholarship that requires me to major in Physics. This is something I could see myself doing, but I am very interested in Political Science and Business as well, so I'm not sure if I want to tie myself down.

I was also accepted into Honors Carolina at UNC Chapel Hill. I am waiting to hear back from the financial aid office, but I will most likely be paying for part of my COA out of pocket with loans and such.

In regards to how I will fit in at either school, I am a pretty diverse guy and enjoy lots of different things. I am looking for an intelligent class of interesting people who don't feel like they have to prescribe to a certain standard . I am not really into the Greek Scene and some people call me a "hipster".

What do you guys think, based on student life and cost? WFU or UNC?

I think it really depends on your financial aid/ total cost for UNC. With that said, if costs come out to be similar I would go with UNC. I don’t think its a good idea to weigh yourself down with the Physics major and give up that flexibility. You could find yourself stuck even though you are getting a great deal (1/2 tuition).
Wake is also pretty Greek, and described by some to be homogeneous. I think the diversity of UNC would be a plus for you.
You should also consider how much class size matters to you. If it is an important factor then Wake pulls ahead a bit.
However, if you are more concerned with diversity UNC wins.
Again wait until you hear back from UNC’s financial aid. But it sounds like UNC would be a better fit.
Good luck OP!

Assuming the loans aren’t too onerous, I’d opt for UNC. I know a number of students who came into university as physics majors because they did well at AP Physics B and C, but then switched when they realized just how theoretical upper div physics is. Heck even my best friend whose parents were both physics majors in college and one is a physics professor at a highly esteemed research university switched after taking quantum I. Even if you do major in physics, UNC’s program seems to be quite robust. I think the lack of stress that comes from knowing you can change majors is worth at least some money.

I agree with the above comments. It sounds like UNC would be a better fit for you. More importantly, though, you should leave yourself room to decide on a different major. So many students change majors during their college years. If you’re a NC resident, half tuition at Wake Forest would still be way more expensive than full tuition at UNC. Good luck!
