okay so i just applied to wake forest which has always been a top school of mine and i'm a bit conflicted. I already got into tulane already and so hypothetically, if i get into wake forest, it's going to be a tough decision. However, there's something about tulane that is making me question if I should go there. I can't say what it is because to be honest, I don't know what it is. But anyway, i'm going to major in business and I wanted to get your opinion on which is the better school for the field of finance or international business. It would also be great if you could list the pros and cons of not only the academics of wake forest but it's social life as well. Thank you.

Both schools have a big Greek life presence; New Orleans offers more “social life” (bars & restaurants) beyond the Greek scene. Winston has a strong arts community for a town its size. Workload and sense of community at Wake are both high; Wake feels like a small LAC with the addition of Division I sports. Wake has some great study abroad programs which would be worth checking out given your interest in international business. FWIW, in our neck of the woods, Tulane is considered more of a party school.

Is money a consideration for you? Tulane usually comes in with better financial aid.

money really isn’t a key factor for me. luckily, i do not have to choose a college based on the tuition. but yeah, my main problem is if i do get in and go to wake, i won’t have as much fun as I would at tulane. So my issue would be whether i want a “better” education or a more fun experience.

are the schools as prestigious?

I think Wake was ranked very high this year by US News and World Report if you are in to that. Both schools are party schools. Someone might be able to clarify but there was a case recently where every single ambulance in W-S was in use due to kids over drinking. A big event had to be shut down because of it. Both campuses are gorgeous. Both schools have good networks. Tulane does have a generous scholarship program… I believe because they are still recovering from the hurricane fallout. Tulane is literally right next door to another college so there is a lot of buzz. It is across the street from a huge park and in a very wealthy neighborhood.

I really wouldn’t consider Wake a “Party School” as that has the connotation that the academics are weak. Wake certainly has a bit of fun but I don’t think people look at it the same was as Tulane, UF, ASU, Iowa which are real party schools.

Also I will agree with Living that Tulane gives very generous merit scholarships, I received one (but hope to attend Wake)

If you mean “party school” in the sense that some students at Wake party, okay. If you mean that the culture is dominated by partying, you don’t know Wake. Students take academics very seriously here. That’s like saying Yale is a party school because they have a strong fraternity presence. Also the incident you mentioned happened in 2009. The responsible organizations were given the “death penalty” and lost all Wake charter. It’s not behavior that happens often. Please take the time to research your information before you talk about what you think and what you’ve heard, as it can propagate lies that people will then pawn off as the truth. Also, 14wils, don’t choose a college based on how much “fun” you think will have. That’s one of those things you sit around with your buddies at 30 yrs old regretting and saying what “coulda been” had you been a little more mature. Just throwing that out there. Yes, you’ll have a fun time at Wake, but more importantly you’ll get a great education.

Go Deacs,
WFU '16

My son just got back from a scholarship trip to Wake. The student who put him up is triple majoring in Poly Sci, Theater and Chinese. When the host wasn’t performing in his show and taking care of host duties, he was studying. I accidentally called my son at 12:30 east coast time (oops… time difference). I woke my son up and was horrified that I might have woken up his host. My son assured me that that wasn’t the case. The host student was up studying!

My son said that the Wake students he met over the course of the visit were smart, hard working and really, really nice. Granted, he was there for a theater scholarship and theater has a reputation for being a close knit group. Also, people choose a theater program at a school like Wake because they value a BA education. I think most theater students at Wake are double majoring. When you are doing shows and working on multiple majors, you don’t have a whole lot of time to waste on beer pong.

For the record… my son has also been admitted to Tulane.

Hey, I’m also deciding between the two, but am waiting to hear from wake. I absolutely loved Tulane when I visited, but I know wake is a great school too.
