When did the arts change the way you perceive the world?
Any ideas???

the term “the arts” encompasses many artistic forms such as the obvious: music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts etc. Think about your experiences. Did you visit a museum or art gallery that left a lasting impression? Did you get dragged to some theatre or broadway production and you were pleasantly surprised? Did you see a film or documentary about something that made you want to learn more about the subject. Have you ever seen photography that has captured your imagination about a person or place? We discover knowledge in the most unusual places. Art is all relative. For example, my husband travels quite frequently abroad. On a visit to Senegal he was walking through these make shift stalls where the locals display their wares, pottery, weavings, paintings etc. He came across this woman who was selling these beautiful tablecloths that had been crocheted by hand. She had asked something like $20 for it and as is the custom my husband got her down to $10. $10! You should see this beautiful work of “art”. These people are dirt poor and my husband has said that they live in unimaginable poverty. Anyway, every Thanksgiving I use this table cloth for my table and I think of this woman who obviously worked endless hours to create something she sold for $10.
Now in Africa, $10 buys you alot when you have nothing, but here in the US we spend that to go to the movies for 2 hours. This one tablecloth has changed the way I feel about poverty in places like Africa and not a year goes by that I don’t think about this woman and wonder if she is still selling these tablecloths or has succumbed to the horrible conditions that surround her. As an 18 year old you have had many encounters with art. Just think about how any of those experience have moved you. Remember there is no right or wrong answer. I think they are just looking for students who consider their encounter with, for example, “music” as something more than what is on their itunes playlist.

Irishmary203: I bet you’d get into college again if you tried.

I chose musical comedy and how it encompasses two different art forms. I wrote how Stephen Lynch and Bo Burnham inspired me to start taking guitar lessons. (true story)
any good though?

smbsmom: HaHa no thank you! Once was enough for me and now I have the pleasure of watching my kids go through it!
rc: I think your idea is great. See it wasn’t so hard. I think writing about the “arts” terrifies teenagers. I know my son groaned when he saw the arts question last year. But I think that the different type of questions on the Wake supplement really allow students the chance to express who they are to admissions. I would love to be a reader, I bet they get some pretty wild answers. Good Luck to you in your college quest.
