[The statement above implies that our comfort with what we know makes it difficult ot accep change, even when it is a change for the better. Write an essay supporting, disputing, or qualifying the statement.]

Change often involves a period of readjustment. This may just be a quick and easy process or an arduous and instable period of time. Such obscurity regarding the outcome of a change causes us to build our inclinations toward comfort and limiting ourselves to what we already know.

Vincent Van Gogh, a painter, perfectly examplifies how we do not easily accept change. Although he is today an eminent painter who inspired many Impressionists, his innovative techniques were rejected by the people of his time. The widely accepted approach to painting was to mix paint in order to form the 'right' hue and apply them evenly on canvas. However, Van Gogh insisted in using flat colors and dabbing them in thick, uneven layers on canvas. Such a change in approach to painting made people uneasy and as a result, disparage it, causing Van Gogh to sell only one painting during his entire life.

"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin also illustrates our reluctance to accept new ideas and change. Edna, the protagonist, was initially a faithful Victorian woman who devoted her life to her husband and children. However, she gradually feels an internal awakening that motivates her to follow her passion and construct her own identity. She begins to pick up on painting and starts an affair with Robert, driven by her sexual passion. She eventually abandons her obligations as a mother and a wife to have a life of her own. Yet her effort to free herself is unwelcomed by the society, even by other women. Her innovative attempt to change the lives of women causes her to be strictly isolated. Unable to bear the hostility of others, she finally commits suicide.

The examples Vincent Van Gogh and Edna of "The Awakening" demonstrate our hesitations to accept change. The uncertainty of the aftermath of a change directs us to the comfort that is gained from what we already know.
