Wake Forest vs. NYU

I am a senior in high school in North Carolina. I strive to major in biology/neuroscience/pre-med and continue on to medical school. I planned on applying to both Wake Forest University and New York University but as application deadlines are right around the corner my parents and I believe it is best to only apply to one or the other. Which one should I apply to if I intend to pursue pre med/biology? or should I just apply to both and see what happens.

The time to decide between two competing programs is when you’ve been accepted to them. Apply to both and good luck to you!

Agree with what @CaMom13 said - and I presume you have applied to other schools too? With WF admit rate below 30% and NYU below 20%, neither will be a safety.

I am a huge fan of Wake Forest. It offers smaller classes than virtually all of the other selective universities and even many of the highly selective liberal arts colleges. On top of that, it has a beautiful campus, friendly students, and lots of school spirit.

As the poster above noted, Wake and NYU are pretty selective. I’m assuming you’re applying to Carolina and/or State as a safety/safe match, as most high-achieving NC students do. Both are sink-or-swim in the sciences, especially Carolina, which has brutal curves in introductory courses. I recommend taking a look at some of the other UNC schools if you haven’t yet. UNC Asheville in particular might make a nice safety.

The two schools are quiet different (NYU is very urban, northern, no real campus, minimal sports while Wake Forest is southern, traditional campus, D1 sports etc.) – it is hard to believe that you don’t have a preference.

But I agree that they are both very selective. Consider your preference for location/campus life, as well as finances (especially if med school might be in your future).

Have you visited NYU @sschwartz1128 ? I applied to both as well, but honestly Wake is where I’d rather be. The campus is amazing, strong academics, and great school culture.

My only drawback on Wake was Winston Salem, and I don’t honestly think it’s that bad.

While I loved the energy at NYU, the lack of school spirit/campus was a big drawback for me. (I’m in Georgia).

NYU is better. Medical School in NYU is free now.

That is an irrelevant statement. The OP isn’t applying to medical school. Undergraduate is still $75k/year.

As noted above, these two schools are quite different. Do you have a preference? If not, can you apply to both if time and finances allow?

FYI …the “better” school is the one that is a good fit and is affordable. Both are excellent. NYU undergrad is not free…it’s very expensive.

I’m finding this thread odd tbh. Not sure when WF deadline is but NYU is tomorrow. And NYU care about the supplemental essay. Even if the colleges were not so very different, it seems odd to just “choose one” considering neither school can be considered a safety. Seeing as OP hasn’t been back on here I hope s/he has spent the day working on both applications.

Wake Forest deadline tomorrow, and there are hours worth of supplemental essays

@Silivon As @Eeyore123 pointed out that’s irrelevant. I wanted to point out, though, that isn’t exactly “free”…NYC’s living expenses are something to consider.

One would be hard pressed to find two schools with a different collegiate experience. Both fantastic in their own way but “wow” different.
